The Athens 2004 Olympics Blimp

This is one of the two blimps used during the Athens 2004 Olympics, stationed at the old Hellenicon Athens airport. Last time I checked about two or three months ago, one of the blimps was still there.

Actually a good part of the old airport was converted for olympic use and hosted the basketball, fencing and kanoe-kayak slalom course. The olympic marina is also nearby.

Actually, there were at least 4 blimps. I saw 3 of them flying at one time once.

There were in fact only 3 blimps used on the Olympics. 2 large and 1 small.

One for security, one as a camera platform for NBC covering the whole of Athens and one (the small one) as a camera platform for NBC covering the beach volleyball. The small blimp was tethered to the ground and could only go up and down, the larger ones could go where they liked.

I know this as I was based at the former airport as a camera tech on the helicopters
