this used to be the longest runway in the world, im not sure if it is the longest in the world now but i am sure that it has shutdown, notice the crosses on the runway, this indicated that the runway is no longer in use.

Well, actually the strip is probably still in use because there is still a nice decent chunk of space of space without Xs. Also note the end/start of runway marker (there's probably a correct term for this) right before the Xs.

Just my comment,
Mark

Likely that they're not using the runway any longer if there are any X's on it at all. Standard practice in the US, at least to the best of my knowledge, is to position a series of X's near the ends of the runway. Saves money and (I say this because Area 51 is, obviously, a government operation) it also saves time.

They've got alien spacecraft and wicked-cool weapons systems to study... very little time for painting X's.

When you look at the runway only some of it has Xs and there is runway numbers right before the Xs start so they still use it.

It looks like they moved the threshold of 14R to the point where the new taxiway cuts across. It seems like the part of the runway south if the construction is still in use.

In reading about Kelly Johnson who ran lockheeds skunkworks and designed the U-2 & SR-71 among many others I found that in 1955, at the request of the CIA, Johnson and a test pilot initiated a search to find a very out of the way place to test the U-2. They found a dry lakebed , Groom Lake. Government land is shown on maps as areas and groom lake happened to be in Area 51. They Painted runways on the lakebed. Concrete ones came later.

Answer to why you need a long landing strip. If you were flying expermental aircraft you would pray to god for a runway that long. As for landing the space shuttle it is possible for them to use but as far as I know nasa has a large list of possible emergency landing sites. On a lighter note the e.t.'s wouldn't mind them landing there but the "cammo dudes" wouldn't be happy with all the publicity.

Well, according to the FAR/AIM, the rulebook of the FAA yellow crosses across a runway or taxiway indicated that they are closed. So if the 'cammo dudes' stick to civillan rules rwy14R/32L is closed and only 14L/32R (the shorter parrallel one) and 12/30 (the short one in the West) are still operational
