The village of Imber on Salisbury plain was evacuated for use by the army in WW2. The inhabitiants where told it was only for six weeks (in the run up to d-day). They where never allowed to return.
The village is in the middle of a firing range and is only accessble (safely) for a couple of day a year.
Access is usually possible between christmas and new year, I've been, and it's a very eerie place.
