A device to increase the salinity of brine. The brine cascades over blackthorn bundles, which facilitate evaporation of moisture (increasing the salt content thereof) and also absorbing some of the impurities (lime, gypsum) present in the brine.
Originally an integral part of the salt producing industry, they are now more commonly used as a form of health spa, the air within the gradierwerk being said to have healthy properties.
