Zakouma Elephant poaching March 2007 Nat Geo Mag

The cover story of the March issue of National Geographic Magazine covers the issue of poaching of Chad's last large elephant herd. Additionally, it also covers the diversity of wildlife found in this region of the world which as been plagued by war, drought and other problems. The Google Earth file can be found at:

The highlights of the Google Earth file include an animation of one of the GPS collared elephants that was ultimately poached, journal entries from Mike Fay, animated camera trap links and the look at the diversity of wildlife found on two aerial surveys of the area in both the dry and wet seasons of 2006.

This story highlights a problem which has not received much attention until Mike Fay and Nick Nichols explored the area and found the problem of poaching to be widespread.
