Food Mapping
      #1156216 - 04/21/08 01:39 PM

We've been experimenting with mapping food systems using Google Earth. It's taken on many different forms and we are continuing to expand on the idea.

To see what we've done to date, please see Middlebury College Food Mapping

Bill:

This is a terrific project. It ties food, an essential and enjoyable component of the students' and everyone else's lives to the local and global environment and economy. With each exploratory mouse click, it uses placemarks, paths, linked kmz files, and informational web pages very effectively to show where the ingredients of different meal offerings originate and how they travel to be brought together for the final delicious product. As the features that appear on the map indicate, a large proportion of the ingredients used at Middlebury College come from within the local 60-mile radius, while a few arrive from afar. This indicates an enlightened meal program. It is a great example to present at a time when increasing energy difficulties, global climate change, strife, and other problems are conspiring to create an escalating food crisis. See The New York Times: The Food Chain and the threads The idea of biofuels is good, but...., Malnutrition in Somalia, and Unforeseen costs of the global economy .

Maintenance of biodiversity is also important for the future of our food supply. See the post Svalbard International Seed Vault.

Keep expanding this project! One suggestion, for the future, is to link the specifics of the cultivation of the food ingredients to the soil, water, sunlight, natural biota, and other aspects of physical and biological environment and the climate to portray an integrated perspective of how the students' lives are tied to the entire Earth system.

This project will help students learn to manage our planet intelligently, no matter what career path each of them chooses.

bhegman -

What a timely and informative project - and welcome to Google Earth Community! It's gratifying to see people like you gathering solid information to add to our knowledge of food-distribution and consumption issues. Like Java, I hope you keep going with this.

Regards,
Diane
