Geothermal power and other sources of alternative energy are becoming increasingly important as fossil fuels increase in difficulty of recovery and expense, and as concern about climate change increases.

A Googol of Heat Beneath Our Feet describes Google.org's efforts to promote the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), which produce electricity from the energy in hot rock beneath the Earth's surface. The site provides information about EGS technology along with kmz data, such as ground overlays, that indicate temperatures of geothermal resources at various depths beneath the surface in the United States. It also offers 3D Models and an animation of the Cooper Basin EGS project in Australia.

United States Geological Survey Circular 1249: Geothermal Energy—Clean Power From the Earth’s Heat provides information on other strategies for harnessing geothermal energy, including using steam released from hot subsurface water under pressure to drive turbines and direct use of geothermal water to heat buildings.

The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy offers geographic data, including a kmz file, and other technical information about geothermal energy.
