Svalbard International Seed Vault

Future Home of the Svalbard International Seed Vault.

Norway is building multi-million dollar facility to store seeds from all the worlds plants, so in case of disaster there will be a seed stock available. Either local disasters, like the tsunami that wiped out one gov't's seed bank, or a world-wide doomsday.

Needing no human intervention, guarded by an army of polar bears, and buried deep in the subzero permafrost, so that if the refrigeration system ever dies, the facility will still be cold. Each of the vaults will be about half the size of a football field. The entire thing is dug into the side of a sandstone mountain.

The image overlay is an artists depiction of the layout of the facility.
