originally named 'etz chayim' synagogue. it all started in 1732 when moses goldsmidt pawned a house in the poelestraat for the jewish community. in 1754 the jewish community bought some houses in the folkingestraat and build the synagogue in 1756. it became a ruin and was rebuild, opened and inaugurated in 1906. in 1942, almost all of the jewish members were deported and the building was sold after the war to a become a laundry in 1952. in 1971 a woman called Lenny Wolgen-Salomons raised money to save the almost torned down building and founded the 'folkingestraat synagogue foundation' in 1975. the synagoge was re-inaugurated in 1981, and is still in use today.

a typical description of the building: 'it looks like a mosque, is build like a church and is used as a synagogue'.
