The story of Lydia's flight to get food for her "chick" has been all over the news. I found it really intriguing, being the Christmas season, and Christmas Island.
It's also interesting that Lydia was off in search of food and went to such lengths to get it. Kind of makes you think she did this without any thought of receiving anything in return. I'd say that's truly in the Christmas spirit.
This took a long time to put together and I hope you all like it. The path for "Lydia" was laid out using the Polygon tool, and an image overlay published by BirdLife International who is conducting this research by a grant from the USA.
You can even see the volcanoes that "Lydia" flew over (near).
Any feedback would be welcome.
Change Log:
1/19/06 Added an enhanced map of Christmas Island. Added a Breeding Grounds map overlaying the above map. Added placemarks of the Christamas Island Frigatebird's Breeding Grounds. Added a link to a movie w/audio of the Christmas Island Frigatebird. (note: it is widely belived that this bird only makes sounds when its in its bredding grounds. Added many more pictures of the Christams Island Frigatebird to various placemarks. Added 2 more Volcanoes that were near Lydia's flight path and a brief description about these volcanoes.
1/14/06 Corrected Christmas Island placemarks and map
12/31/05 Fine tuned some of the placemarks. Added more information about Christmas Island (Kiribati). Added a satelite image of Christmas Island Added Placemark "About Kiribati & It's People" (includes a poem about Frigatebirds and Christmas Island by Jane Resture Added Placemarks for several volcanoes, and infformation about each, that Lydia flew over or nearby. Added more pictures of frigatebirds, see Facts.
Thanks,
Gary

ghodges, this is a wonderful post! Excellent research, and a very nice layout and presentation! Thank you - well done!!
Also, I re-saved your original with the overlay enabled this time, at about 1/2 intensity - it gives a better start to your presentation.
Keep up the excellent work.

Chief,
Thanks for all the feedback and change to the .kmz. I do see what you mean about the overlay. I always wonder if I should enable it or have it for reference in case someone wants to view it. Sometimes, I think of not including the overlay at all so it doesn't "cloud" the presentation, so to speak. Am never really sure when its good and when its not good to enable the overlay. For example: I have this post over here on Early PA Migration , which has multiple overlays a boat load of placemarks and whatnot. Furthermore, its a huge project, that I think will be ongoing. I often wonder if I'm approaching it right.
If you can find the time and have an interest would you mind taking a look at it and give me your honest feedback? I really want to keep it going, but also want to make sure I'm presenting it in the most appropriate way.
Again, thanks for the feedback and rating, it wasn't expected.
Have a good Christmas.
Gary
P.S. I wish there was someway to automate the tours, angles of view, height, etc...perhaps that will come in a future release?

Hill,
Thanks for the comments...I wouldn't have beat you to it if I wasn't at work, its been real slow, due to the holidays. But, being in IT you often have to work holidays. Since, I have to look at monitors for 12 hrs a day, I might as well do something productive; even if its not work related. (don't tell my boss) LOL
Have a great Christmas!

Hi, ghodges, and thanks for an absolutely great post. Having been an amateur ornithologist for the past 50 years I appreciate how important this type of information can be.

edit: Re-read what you put - automate - and cleared out my answer.
I'll take a look at your other one a bit later, and PM you.
Again, thanks for THIS post - I really like it.

I was replying to your post above about being able to automate the tours, height, angles etc. I missed the "automate" part and had replied on setting height, etc manually.
