Great find, bigmatt23!

This area is renowned for whales (see also this post and this post) so I have no doubt you are correct.

Nice work!

Hello folks,

I'm new to that forum and therefore not shure if I'm posting at the right place here.
About 1.5 kilometers off Valparaiso I found something looking like a big whale. It's about 20 meters long.
What do you think about it?

cu, Hombre64

Welcome to GEC Hombre64

What you have found is a boat. You can see the wake turbulence kicked up be the engines. However --if you follow the links in Heamits post above --you can see real whales off the coast Australia, Argentina and California

This one looked good at first, Hombre64, but I think it is a 65' boat. It is much too broad for a whale. See the attached overlay of a Blue Whale, scaled to 110', the largest known size of this largest of species. The wake also looks typical of a boat, not a whale. But keep looking...

Thanks a lot,

I just looked at most of the whales posted here.
I also thought, someone must have seen my "whale" before but give it a try .

Thanks again for your fast help and greetz from Vienna, Hombre64

Great job of whale-spotting, Hombre64! Imagine what we'd find if more ocean was hi-res.

The Valparaiso one looks convincing - I would think it was a whale, too, after finding the one in Australia. But, I can see what looks like a smokestack (or something) sticking up in the middle of the boat.

Hope you're looking for more!
