Scientists have discovered the most ancient rocks on Earth, in a region called the Nuvvuagittuq greenstone belt, in northern Quebec, Canada.

The age of the rocks has been estimated to be 4.28 billion years old, not long (in geological time) after the birth of the solar system, and 250 million years older than the Acasta gneiss complex discovered in north west Canada.

From Blt's excellent post here, we learn that the zircon crystals found at Jack Hills, Australia, are 4.4 billion years old. That's 120 million years older. However, these are whole rocks rather than crystals, which are more resistant to erosion and weathering.

Hi Groovy!

According to a CBCnews Online Report this morning>>> The World's Oldest Rocks <<< are located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay about 40 kilometers south of Inukjuak, Quebec CA. which appears to be just onshore from Leonard Island. The photos show an island across the estuary...but then there are a lot of those on that coast

Too bad it's not in Hi-REs, you might be able to locate the hill on that out island in the photo!

Hi,

I just described the actual location in another post: it's at 58°16'45.49"N, 77°43'52.58"W. There should be a shared marker in the Google Earth Community layer now.

Thank you very much Barns and Zonule

I have placed the marker somewhere between your locations, which were far closer than mine!

Hey Barns, perhaps I should of asked in F&G. I'm sure those guys would of pinpointed the location down to the nearest millimetre!

Cheers.
