This is a GIF image overlay of the annual precipitation of Hawaii on to the islands. Clearly evident is the North/Northwest shores being the wettest. In some parts of Maui, the west and southwest lowland areas in the rain shadow of Haleakala Volcano are a true desert, getting less than 10 inches of rain. Also of note is the summit of Kauai(second from Left). Kauai is home the incredible Na Pali Coast, the Grand Canyon of Hawaii and also the wettest spot on Earth. The summit recieves 430 inches of rain annualy- causing the map overlay to be clear. Google earth happens to have the summit in high resolution satellite- making for one interesting image!
