Possible impact site

Found this in May of 2006 while following the river to its source. It appears to be in an area that does not have/or had any volcanic activity like the Eastern part of the country. I sent an e-mail to a Professor of Geology at a Canadian University with the LAT and LONG of the site and asked him to take a look at it. His reply stated that it did indeed look like a possible impact site, but it would have to have an expedition sent to it so they could drill for shocked quartz to determine its origin. If anyone has any information on this, please e-mail me at vshawjr@satx.rr.com.

Hi Lee Shaw et al:

Great find for your first post!

The circular and rippled structure you found is located in Ethiopia, roughly 387 km WNW of the capital ADDIS ABBIA and located more precisely at lat=10.2265457049, and lon=35.4106740227. As you said, it is also located near the Nile River.

One nice thing about impact craters is that there are several good catalogues of known craters/impact sites on the web, indexed by country and other variables. I did not dig deeply into this, but checked the lists by Jarmo Moilane and failed to find your structure in Jarmo's list! Possibly further work may reveal it to be an impact structure.

Happy geo-surfing!!

Welcome to GEC Lee

Interesting find.

Its not an impact crater--Its a dormant volcano called Ciababa .

Quote:

Currently, 18 impact structures have been identified on the continent of Africa. No impact structures are so far known in Ethiopia, with the exception of a suggestion of an impact crater centered on the town of Shakiso, southern Ethiopia.

danescombe,

a precision -- the Shakiso crater was investigated by Christian Koeberl from the University of Wien, and he found that there is definitely no impact crater there (the pdf can be downloaded there -- http://www.univie.ac.at/geochemistry/koeberl/publication_list/ ).

His team could never find the shatter cones that were reported to be there in abundance by the Russian who had made a report on this structure (I can't remember his name but I saw the report once).
