View in Google Earth         View in Google Maps (1744 downloads)

Hi there,

This is the start of a Google-earth index to my hikes in the Scottish Highlands. Zoom in, select an area on the left panel and click on the boots to find the route descriptions. You can choose to view walks in only specific areas and grades.

I'll be updating this further over the coming months with many more routes.

Latest update: 21st April 2008. Another 50 routes added, mostly in Perthshire and Argyll. The file now contains over 470 hiking routes. A version which uses regions and network links to only load the areas being viewed is on the http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/ website

This is an excellent Post and a valuable resource. You have clearly put a great deal of effort into its execution.

If i may make a suggestion ?

Re-save & Re-Submit the KML file with all the check box's unchecked.

Why?.

This will aid members with slower machines and also not give a such cluttered appearances when first loading.

Users can then scroll thought the list of walks themselves.

BTW--I have walked extensively around Loch Torridon & Beinn Eighe --Your accuracy is first class.

Cheers. I've resubmitted the file with the walks 'unchecked' at first as you suggest, and added an instructions waypoint to be the first thing clicked on.

I've also added another 70 hikes since the last version.

I've tried various places asking about licence issues, and haven't had any response from google so far, so sorry but I'm asking here as well! I've created all these hikes by exporting to kml format from my GPS mapping applications, and have only used Google Earth to group them in folders and save as KMZ (which I could so without GE, if this is an issue). Now the walks etc. are all provided free, non-commercial etc., but they link to my website for the free walk descriptions and (also free) GPX downloads. My website does contain some advertising however (Adsense plus some accommodation which could be of interest etc.).

Am I OK using GE for testing the walk files look ok and organising into folders? O should I be doing this manually or in another application to avoid using GE?

I can't work out whether or not Google regard what I'm doing as commercial use. I've seen in other posts that G staff have said it's ok to use GE for business use such as sharing the location of a conference with co-workers. I reckon I'm less commercial than that, but can anyone from G confirm the situation?
