Australia's 'Morning Glory' cloud

The remote Queensland settlement of Burketown, with a population under 200, plays host every September and October to gliding enthusiasts keen to experience the thrill of "surfing the Morning Glory" – in effect soaring on wind they can see.
Briton Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, writes on the society's website (from which the photo below originates) that the Morning Glory looks "like a huge white roll of meringue, it stretches up to 600 miles and sweeps over Burketown at speeds of up to 35mph".
The cloud, known as the yippipie to the local aboriginals, usually approaches from the northeast, billowing up and forward from a dark line across the dawn horizon. The waves of rising and falling air that create the cloud appear to be the result of opposing sea breezes over the Cape York Peninsula, but it's not yet understood why the cloud varies in appearance, sometimes in one or two solitary waves of limited extent and at other times a succession of vast waves.
Glider pilots have made an annual pilgrimage to Burketown since 1989, when Russell White and Rob Thompson began the craze. See Pretor-Pinney's website for a full account of the phenomenon and the aerobatics involved.

I must have missed this first time around. It's fascinating. There are some great videos on the Cloud Appreciation site, as well as the one arwtee gave (thanks arwtee ).

There are some amazing images of the Morning Glory at this site:

Most are taken from gliders, and date from 1992 through to 2007.
