This folder group main RDC mines of the katanguian copperbelt. These mines are most of the time Cu-Co bearing with some uranium mines, gold deposit and the famousZn-Pb-Cu...Kipushi mine.
Location of these mines are hard to find and frequently wrong. If you find any proved location error, tell me and I will change.
Copper Mine
Copper-Cobalt mine abandoned in the late 1980's. It has an enriched oxydized uranium dolomitic lens.
Manganese deposit, known for elbaite (Tsilaisite)
Cu-Co Mine started in 1940's
Group of connecting mine (Kamoto-Oliveira-Virgule cuts) which copper and cobalt bearing. Exploitation started in 1982 and now connect Musonoï Extension to Kamoto East.
Ancient copper mine also exploited for gold. Started in 1903. (Cu-Au-Pd-Pt-Sn)
Cu-Co mine started in 1978
Ancient copper mine, started in 1903, also enriched in cobalt and uranium
Copper mine started in 1975 and still working. Connection to Mashamba East could be possible.
Important mine for Copper and cobalt but also for its thrust-slice 2400 (Cu-Co-U-Pb-Mo-Cr-V...). started in the 1950's
Exploited in 1950 to 1990 for copper and cobalt
Part of Kolwezi group of mine. This is a very important Copper, Cobalt and uranium mine
The famous Shinkolobwe mine exploited from 1915 (for radium) to 1960. This is mainly an uranium mine. Uranium from this mine has been used for the first two atomic bombs (Los Alamos and Hiroshima) This deposit is also rich in copper, iron, nickel, cobalt with numerous minor elements. This mine, along with Kasolo Mine has provided 33 new mineral species.
Cu deposit worked as an opencast.
Abandoned copper mine
A 'secret' open cut for its no specimen policy
Copper mineralization in Roan potassic arkose
Cu Mine
Uranium deposit worked from an open cast, also rich in vanadium
Abandoned copper-cobalt mine
Cu-Co deposit worked since 1911
Zn-Pb-Cu mine featuring a suite of Zn-Pb-Cu-Fe sulphides with accessory Ga, Ge, Mo, W and V mineralization in Kundelungian dolomite and schist dolomite
Cu-Co mine worked between 1953 and 1982
Prospecting site rich in copper and uranium
abandoned opencast copper mine
A small prospect, not fully exploited for copper.
Copper mine started in 1915 and now abandoned.
A copper deposit now abandoned
A copper mine abandoned in the 1980's
Cu deposit worked from several open cut that were abandoned during the 1970's. Remaining dumps are exploited.
Cu-Co deposit worked from an open-cut
a small prospect now abandoned
A abandoned copper mine
Cu-Co Mine exploited during the 1930-1940's.
From Tenke hill to Fungurume hill, there are several copper-cobalt deposit with some still not worked. reserves are 222 million tons with 4.69% copper and 0.36% cobalt.
Worked for cobalt in the 1930's and notably directly from sphaerocobaltite CoCO3.
Prospecting area
A copper mine worked in the 1930 and 1940's but not fully exploited. First Co-calcite comes from there.
A Nickel-Copper-Cobalt deposit on the Kasompi Hill, worked during 1940 and 1950's.
Cu-Co worked from 1913 to 1949

Geologview - Very nice set of placemarks. I was inspired to find a geologic map for context which I have attached along with a few interesting links I found in my search.

An overview of the copper mining industry
Quote:

The Central African Copperbelt is one of the great metallogenic districts of the world. Extending from north-central Zambia into the southern portion of Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), it is estimated to contain a global resource of more than five billion tonnes (t) of copper ore, with grades often up to 4%. The region is also well known for its spectacular cobalt concentrations (around 40% of the world’s reserve base according to the US Geological Survey) within the same deposits, as well as associated occurrences of lead-zinc (Pb-Zn), uranium, and iron-copper-gold (Fe-Cu-Au).

Good information, but this particular placemark on 11º 59' S : 35º 49' E, is way out of Zambia and very far from Katanga. It is in the Heart of Niassa - Mozambique. Am I missing something ?

Here is another mine in the area. I have not been able to find out the name of it or what is mined here unfortunately.

Marked this Mine as:

Kamwali (Gecamines)
Other names: Kamwale
Resources: 1.56Mt at 4.92% Cu & 1.96% Co
Feedstock for Gecamines' Kambove concentrator

1 of 252 entries on Katangan Copperbelt

the other one is called: Zambian Copperbelt , but covers the whole Zambian territory

A whole lot of work, so still in beta
Comments appreciated
