Desolate comes to mind....

The attached kml shows abandoned settlements south of the Takla Makan Desert. The view is south toward the Kunlun Mountains in far southwestern China . Take some time to zoom and scan around the area and see if it doesn't bring the words "desolate" and "beautiful" to mind.

This area is in the vicinity of the old "Silk Road". I wonder how long ago the structures were built and how long the old outpost survived.
