harbor seals

beautiful and very unique satellite view of harbor seals, also known as common seals. their habitat is mostly in the waddenzee and this small population of around 200 here in the oosterschelde. abandoned or hurt seals are taken to ecomare, texel or pieterburen, groningen where they are rehabilitated.




in the 80's, only 1000 common seals were counted in the netherlands probably due to a virus and pollution but that number was brought back to 3500 in 2001. in 2002, 4500 were counted in the waddenzee. a status report can be found here.
