Google Earth Community: New species of bird discovered in Colombia SA

Ornithologists reported recently that a new species of bird has been discovered in the remote mountain region of Colombia. The bird, a type of finch, has been named the Yariguies Brush Finch or Atlapetes latinuchus yariguierum. It was named after the indigenous tribe whose members committed suicide centuries ago rather than submit to Spanish rule. The area of discovery is part of a recently designated protected nature preserve.

This was the first biological expedition to the area where the bird was found, Serranía de los Yariguíes.The description was published in the June issue of the prestigious scientific journal Bulletin of the British Ornithologists Club (Vol. 126: June 2006). Media outlets began carrying the story in early October.
