Astronomical Observatories of the Lost World

I am starting a new thread on the astronomical observatories of the lost world.

Uxmal, Mexico

Founded in about 500 AD by Hun Uitzil Chac Tutul Xiu, Uxmal meaning "thrice built" or "thrice occupied" in Maya, (pronounced "oosh-mahl"). For generations Uxmal was ruled over by the Xiu family, was the most powerful site in western Yucatan, and for a while in alliance with Chichen Itza dominated all of the northern Maya area. Sometime after about 1200 no new major construction seems to have been made at Uxmal, possibly related to the fall of Uxmal's ally Chichen Itza and the shift of power in Yucatan to Mayapan. The Xiu moved their capital to Maní, and the population of Uxmal declined.




Many of the buildings rely simply on well-cut stones with no mortar. Astronomical alignments at Uxmal surround the planet Venus. The orientation of the long Palace of the Governor acts as a sighting with other buildings at Uxmal pointing to the southernmost rise location of Venus, which occurs once every eight years.
