Google Earth Community: Louis Armstrong House & Archives

Louis Daniel "Satchmo" Armstrong is the most famous jazz musician to ever live. A virtuoso trumpeter and influential vocalist, he was born in 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1943, he and his fourth wife, Lucille, purchased a modest red brick house in Corona, Queens. Despite his personal success, they opted to remain in their home and working class neighborhood for the rest of their lives.

Louis died in 1971. Lucille died in 1983, leaving the home to the City of New York. It turned out to contain a vast treasure trove of information and memorabilia from Armstrong's career, including 1,600 recordings, 650 reel-to-reel tapes in hand-decorated boxes, 86 scrapbooks, 5,000 photographs, 270 sets of band parts, 12 linear feet of papers, correspondence and manuscripts, five trumpets, 14 mouthpieces and 120 awards and plaques.

In 1986, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation gave the house to the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and arranged for Queens College to administer the house under a long-term license agreement. The house was opened to the public in 2003; the interior remains much as it was in Armstrong's lifetime. It is both a New York City Landmark and a National Historic Place.
