Google Earth Community: Umberslade obelisk, nr M40/M42, UK

This is for anyone who, like me, has ever driven past this on the M40, and wondered it what it was!

Originally part of Umberslade park which is now on the other side of the M40, it was erected by Thomas Archer in 1749, though the exact reason appears to be unknown. It may have been connected to his interest in astronomy, or it may have been to celebrate his being ennobled as the first Baron Umberslade. It has also been suggested that the obelisk commemorates the defeat of the Jacobites, or the Peace of Aix la Chapelle.
