In the Odette Sculpture Park , Windsor Canada
Craft by Ben Smit

Aluminium, wood, neon 20’ diameter x 7’ high
In this age of futuristic endeavor, the artist shows us a more simplistic time, probably a more naïve time, when a flying saucer could activate feelings of curiosity, terror, humour and wonder all at once. Today, with modern technology clarifying the world for us, this ship seems foolish in the extreme, and yet somehow a call to allow our imaginations to take off.
Craft is equal parts comedy and compassion; a perfect contemporary cliché. It is certainly silly – the cockpit looks like it might be made out of an upside down stainless steel mixing bowl- but the work also ask some serious questions. What is lost when our fantasies are proven false? Where do we turn when “Unidentified” Flying Objects are sighted everyday, so recognizable that they’re almost boring?

Um, our naivety, ignorance, and credulousness. It's okay to have fantasies, IMHO, as long as we recognize them as fantasies. When we start believing our fantasies to be reality, and try to convince others of the truth of our fantasies, then we've crossed over into delusional thinking.

Hi - this is actually the floating head of the Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain, which floats in the Detroit River and shoots water into the air during the summer. They bring it ashore during the winter to protect it from the ice that builds up. I know that the first time I saw it (while attending the University of Windsor) I wondered what the heck it was, until one of my classmates (who lived in Windsor year round) explained what it was.
