There are strang white objects near San Juan, Argentia.

I have no idea what these are.
Does anybody have an idea about these strange objects ?

No idea, except it looks like a series of shallow ditches scratched into the lighter subsoil. There's another group about 1.3 km to the east . There are also a dozen or so rectangular structures that look like built up berms or perhaps foundations in the same general area.

Lastly, passing through the area is a pair of long straight parallel "roads" that go on for kilometers seemingly ignoring all topography. All very strange. It would be interesting to know the reasons for behind the structures.

Hill, Thank you for your reply.

I've seen the shallow surface scooping other places and I think it has to do with removing the weathered surface soil to expose the unweathered layer beneath to test that layer for the occurrence of minerals. It's those other features I mentioned, the rectangular features and long, straight parallel roads that I'm mystified about. They all may have to do with prospecting. Again, just a guess.

Hi mmz and Hill -

I notice there appear to be roundish shadows in a row beside the white dots marked in mmz's link. That doesn't make sense, either! They would seem to be caused by solid objects at the site of each white dot...but what kind? I thought about microwave dishes, but there is absolutely nothing else to point to that, including tracks or cables around. Also, the dots are irregular, not uniformly round like a dish.

The lines look like preparation for power lines, maybe. The rectangular berms (revetments? not necessarily military) are weird because they seem to be made of a black material hauled in, not the natural dirt in the area. This is another example of when the GEC needs a resident earthworks expert.

Strange, indeed!

I am pretty sure that the "shadows" are piles of dirt scooped from the holes. It is interesting that the dirt piles are dark rather than matching the color of the surface layer. This may also explain the color of the dirt berns around the rectangular areas.

So there may be a tan color which makes up the very top of the soil profile - the part that has been oxidized and weathered, with a dark, unweathered layer below that, and then a very light subsoil below that.

Panoramio layer image by lord_mauricio. The rock that makes up the hills appears to be layered (sedimentary) rock.

The alluvial fans that accumulate at the base of the local hills make be the secondary source ( the hills being the primary source) of one or more minerals, which is what the prospecting ditches may be searching for.

I'm pretty certain that the long straight lines mentioned are seismic survey lines. In the past these were often bulldozed to allow access for Vibroseis trucks.

Cheers

Steve

Hello cptpies

Very good idea, I think you are right. I found some photos with seismic trucks working in line that speak for your theory.

Nice photos, Felippo. I've never seen that kind of operation, though was vaguely aware of seismic exploration.

All-in-all, excellent gathering of evidence here!
