Norwich State Hospital ( Insane asylum )

Probably the most famous part of this hospital was its extensive tunnel system that connected almost every building.

More than 4,000 people at one time walked the grounds and lived in the buildings.

From Oct. 10, 1904, when it opened as the Norwich Hospital for the Insane, to Oct. 10, 1996, these grounds held people from all over the spectrum of life. At one time, the Norwich Hospital was one of the top mental health facilities in New England, and one of the top 20 in the country.

In a few months, the state will decide what will finally become of these 470 acres when it selects a developer.

Some want to build a golf course. Others want to turn it into a theme park with beautiful vistas and movie studios. Still others want to turn it into office space.

You can find a map (overlay?) of buildings and tunnels here.

Norwich State Hospital was in my hometown in Connecticut. I have actually been inside of it several times to explore and photograph. The place is in a magnificent state of decay however it still remains beautiful and the architecture of the older buildings is amazing. As for the underground tunnel system...its just as the map says on AbandonedAsylum however, some of the entrances to some of the buildings are concreted up for whatever reason. Its very creepy being there at night but worth the good pictures. Have you ever been there zoomer?

I only started a username on here so I could contact you in hopes of getting some awesome pics of the inside of the place sent to me. I've recently become very interested in Norwich State Hospital since I live so close to it, and reading your post made me anxious to learn more. My email is siberiantigergoddess@yahoo.com. Please send me stories, pictures, whatever. Thanks.

Hi I'm new here and I came upon this site searching for information on the Norwich State Hospital. I can't seem to find anything but a brief history on it and alot of great pictures of the place. It looks really beautiful and I'd love to go check it out sometime. I live in Southeastern Massachusetts and I love to check out and photograph old abandoned places as a hobby. I've been to a few on that abandonedasylums website but I can't seem to find out where Norwich Hospital is located though. If anyone can help me out, it'd be appreciated.

Hello I just started using this site. I have been doing a lot of research on the hospital but I have really only found some bits and pieces of history on it. I have driven over the groton brigde and have seen it many times and everytime that I look at it, it looks so eerie. I have lived near it most of my life but i have never really even hear anyone talk about it. I have found lots of pictures and thats about all. I don't know the exact location and I would like to visit it myself. There is something about that place that is just not quite right and I want to see it for myself. If anybody knows the history or anything about it and the location I would really appericate it if you would email me at ALostSoul08@yahoo.com . Thanks!

I can shed a little light on the mysterious Norwich State Hospital for anyone who is interested. My former husband was a Resident Physician (Psychiatrist in Training) in the early 70's and we lived with four of our children there for 3 years. If you have seen any maps of the hospital grounds, the "cottages" were actually very nice houses for the Hospital Administrator and various senior physicians on the staff. The grounds of the hospital were beautifully kept and well-maintained, in all seasons. We lived in a neighborhood just north of the hospital grounds.

Our neighborhood consisted of about 10 houses, many of them two-stories, for Residents and their families. As you may know, Residents are not recipients of high salaries, so part of the "package" was a fully furnished house (including linens and kitchen utensils), food for the family, (including fresh meat cut to order, staples, fresh fruits and vegetables, and canned goods), and laundry service. Our enclave was kept in as good order as the hospital grounds, being mowed every week and/or snow plowed in the winter.

My daughter was recently visiting in Connecticut and was able to visit Norwich and found that our neighborhood (considered part of the hospital grounds) was in the same state of decay and disintegration as the hospital itself. What a waste! We have very happy memories of our years there, and are still in contact with a family from Guatemala whom we met the first year. The husband was also a Resident and they are living now in New Jersey.

Hi All,
I lived on the hospital grounds throughout my childhood. My father was a psychiatrist there and we lived in the faculty housing. There is SO much I can tell you about the hospital but I'll keep it here to a simple introduction and post more later.
Originally our family lived 'on the hill' which was the housing 1/2 mile away from the hospital but at a greater elevation, thus the nickname 'the hill' for the 'subdivision' like housing. We had a house keeper that was a hospital patient as the hospital had a work rehabilitation program. There also were gardeners from the program. Our house keepers name was Alice. She obviously was very mentally challenged but cleaned, cooked, and played with us. We adored her. The water pressure for the houses there was provided by a water tower that was at the highest location in the neighborhood. There was a simple steel ladder to the top of the tower (capped off) but we were not allowed to climb it - so of course we all at one time or another climbed all or some of it until we got scared of the height. At one time the tower was overfilled and the resulting pressure was enough to compromise the steel structure. The people in the houses near the tower evacuated. My mother decided not to evacuate us (we lived directly across from the tower) and as children, we were terrified that the tower would burst and we all would drown. Fortunately, nothing happened. Woods surrounded much of the neighborhood and we often played there. A creek in the woods led down to the 'pond' which was near the old hog farm. From what I understand, the hog farm was used to rehabilitate patients by giving them a work experience and of course, the pork contributed to the hospital's kitchens.
I remember moving to the doctor's housing on the 'grounds' as an adolescent. There was a circle of three colonial houses. We lived at the end of the cul de sac. Just below the house was the railroad tracks and the Thames river. To another side of the house, was a pasture with cows. The elderly woman who owned the property leased the pasture out to a cattle farmer. The woman eventually was placed in retirement housing by her family. If I remember right, the woman was in her 90's. The only reason I know any of this is that I wanted to buy a horse and stable it there and let it graze in the pasture. The family said no as it was just at the time the elderly woman was leaving for the retirement home and the family did not want the liability of a horse on the property. Our yard was bordered by the yards of the other two houses. A family who lived in the house next to us became good friends with my family. They owned a collie and being a dog lover, I admired the beautiful dog. A Dutch couple was the next to live in that particular house. They had small children and we used to baby sit them. They now all live in Holland.
Living on the hospital grounds, we became familiar with many buildings and the infamous tunnels. We were not allowed in the tunnels so of course we explored them whenever we could get away with it! I have many memories of the tunnels and where they led. I also have many memories of the pond. We swam there in the summer (and caught turtles) and ice skated there in the winter. The pond went from the hog farm to the nurse's housing. It was kidney shaped.
I'll post more when I have time. Would someone please post what becomes of the property when the decision is final?

Childhood -

I enjoyed your personal memories of this place, especially from a child's point of view. That, and Syd's eerie gallery on Photobucket really make this abandoned asylum tangible.

(Apologies to Syd for reducing his image to fit here. See the original at Syd's gallery.)

I only wish you had included some idea of the dates you were there.

Diane

NSH is very closely watched over by security now. ever since there was a fire there towards the end of summer '07 security has been so intense that if you pull over near one of the buildings (or anywhere on the property) for more than a minute you'll have their white cars on you and they'll tell you to get out of there. a woman was fishing on the river behind it and they took her camera away! the security is crazy. i've been stopped by them a few times (on purpose once). it is probably almost impossible to get in the buildings if even anywhere on the grounds and i want to get in there sooo badly. i drive by it all the time and park in the park in ride right next to the property but thats pretty much as close as i can get. its ashame. why guard the property so much if they're going to be demolishing it soon?
