electrically operated by british waterways staff, the unique dalmuir drop lock releases 2,000 cubic meters of water to create a 3 meter underpass below dumbarton road. the whole operation will take 40 minutes. the dalmuir drop lock is an important link to the forth & clyde canal. according to wikipedia, the drop lock in clydebank is the only one in the world. however, the dutch city of assen is seriously considering of constructing a drop lock too to bring back an historic canal back into the city center.
