Strange transparrent object?
      #981098 - 08/22/07 09:16 PM

Alright I know I'm new here so if i do something wrong just let me know and I'll be sure not to do it again. I was just browsing Google Earth 4.2 specifically the sky mode.

at...

Latitude: 44.0225°
Longitude: -103.194°

It is near NGC 1664 in the Auriga constellation

It looks like a an image of a satellite projected into space... I realize if this was something "out in space" it would have to be gigantic.

I was wondering if anyone could explain how that may have happend

This is the unintended image of a telescope spider, thin struts that support the secondary mirror on a reflecting telescope.

Quote:

Newtonians have a central obstruction due to the secondary mirror in the light path. This obstruction and the diffraction spikes caused by the support structure (called the spider) of the secondary mirror reduces contrast. Visually, these effects can be reduced by using a two or three-legged curved spider. This reduces the diffraction sidelobe intensities by a factor of about four and helps to improve image contrast, with the potential penalty that circular spiders are more prone to wind-induced vibration. Although a four-legged spider causes less diffraction than a three-legged curved spider, the three-legged curved spider often gives a more aesthetically pleasing view.

Spiders are also why very bright stars have 4 spikes in these images.

Why this shadow spider shows up, I have no idea.
