Answer to why you need a long landing strip. If you were flying expermental aircraft you would pray to god for a runway that long. As for landing the space shuttle it is possible for them to use but as far as I know nasa has a large list of possible emergency landing sites.On a lighter note the e.t.'s wouldn't mind them landing there but the "cammo dudes" wouldn't be happy with all the publicity.
