September 13, 1759. On this date the French and British armies met outside the walls of Quebec. French forces under Montcalm were soundly defeated by British troops under Wolfe. Wolfe had, early in the day, landed his troops secretly at Anse au Foulon, (marked) upstream from the city. This was the decisive battle in the history of North America, leading to the end of the the French regime and ensuring that English culture would dominate the new continent.
