The Gulf Stream from space - overlay

This overlay photo is one of the prettiest yet from NASA Earth Observatory and shows the surprisingly meandering path of the Gulf Stream by highlighting water surface temperatures: the lightest pink are the warmest waters, about 23°C., and the darkest blue are the coldest, at 0 to -1°C. It almost looks like a fractal drawing, and makes for a dramatic view of the Atlantic.

The image was made from data collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on April 18, 2005. The link above also has a comparable photo showing chlorophyll concentration.
