The core of an ancient volcan rises above the eroded remains of a plain that once contained a towering volcano. The Volcano is gon and the land is eroded down several hundred feet, exposing cracks in the earth that filled with molen rock and now have been revealed as natural walls extending from the volcano. These dikes to the Navajo gave the appearance of wings giving Ship Rock its Navajo name meaning 'rock with wings'.
