Out of four I checked three I did not find and the fourth had been posted. I know I do not have all that have been posted. I had a larger collection originally but I had a GE crash.

I have no idea if this is an aerial photo or a satellite photo. Either way it's a private jet in flight. It appears that it may have recently left Dulles due to it's proximity. Aside from the fact it is flying in the direction of earth's rotation and based on the SRB's under the wings - I would've guessed it was trying to reach orbital alignment!

jennwill99 welcome to GE. A good find this is an aerial photograph. Satellite captured images of aircraft always have a second exposure ahead of the direction of travel at a lower resolution in blue.

Bonjour, pour trouver des avions en vol, on peut superposer les cartes En Route de l'espace sup�rieur et inf�rieur avec une transparence moyenne, de cette fa�on on rep�re plus facilement les avions, on ne les trouve plus par hasard...
J'ai fais un essai avec les routes sup�rieures..
We can overlay the aeronautical chart to see aircraft in flight on airways with a medium transparency, we can do it for every countries.
I tried with a part of en route chart of upper airspace .

Not sure if this one has been found yet.

A pretty clear example of the satellite double exposure artifact. Interesting how the plane is white where the exposures overlap, gray/tan on the panchromatic image, and with trailing red streaks on the blue multispectral image.

Just read more than I could quite understand on satellite scanning tech, "time delay integration", "pan sharpening", and so on. Pretty amazing, and complex..

Remote sensing details

If you read enough to find those tems, look a little further for orthorectification and you will have just about the full glossary of the behind the scenes work in Google Earth's data production process for images. Of course, there is also work in the terrain, data layers, and 3D buildings processes as well. The goal, though, is that all of this is invisible to end-users who just type in an address and enjoy the fact that it all works as expected. ;-)

pfly you are correct an unposted Airbus A300-600 to add to the collection.
Most of the technical data about satellites make is not unfortunately written in a manner that is easily understood. It often sounds more complex than it really is.

In the old days of black and white photography it was a Manufacturer goal to make a film that was equally sensitive to all colors. This goal was never really achieved. Electronic imaging gets closer because any imbalance in sensitivities can be digitally processed out. A panchromatic image would be the ideal black to white image supporting all of the subtleties of a true gray scale. In the satellite image reconstruction, which assumes a stationary image, white is equivalent to equal amounts of red, green and blue. When you superimpose the displaced image the color and black and white image processing is making wrong assumptions about both the foregound and background actual colors.

Ack, don't say orthorectification! :-) The org where I work is just now working with a vendor to get a new set of orthos, this time using LIDAR data in the post-processing. Between difficulties with the LIDAR and delays in flying due to clouds, it is all several months behind schedule. For a short while when I first began here I was doing quality control on incoming orthos. Thankfully, now I just get to watch the trainwreck from a distance.

The details of satellite-made imagery are pretty new to me. I'm used to seeing airplane/film errors.. even things like bits of lint on the film. Now I have to learn a whole new set of ways for things to go wrong!

As an application, Google Earth keep surprising me in how well it works; but sometimes what seems really novel is the global community of people talking about geography and remote sensing. After years of hearing about the sad state of geographic education, who knew all it takes is a fun tool and a way for people to talk to each other?

Thanks to database update, I found a Fokker 100 likely just leaving Palermo LICJ-PMO from rnwy 20. This airport is not really loved by some pilots because of not easy manoeuvres to take off/land, windshear and the presence of the (too) close Pecoraro Mountain (910 meters high).

I've found several planes before, but this is the first that i'm pretty sure no one posted before.
Right now i'm planespotting and i've just found a 3rd one, just after takeoff from Narita, Japan, maybe a A300.

I'll put this other new one here. It's a plane flying over Fukuoka, Japan. The shadow is clearly visible too. Due to the relative lack of color blurring I suspect the plane is traveling very slowly in preparation for another sharp right turn onto final at Fukuoka Airport.

I'm not convinced about 737: 737-200 is smaller (but measuring tool is not the Holy Bible) and its nose is sharper. A-319s fly often from Florence to Rome (and vice versa) and I'm pretty sure that this plane is just on that airway. Longer flights mostly pass over the sea.

Planes in flight -- thanks!!

What a marvellous compilation of these sightings, which seems to be a specialty of yours.

I haven't been through the whole collection yet, but do I see that some of these images have been changed since the posting? Probably a result of updating the photos. For example, "Landing Dublin Ireland" is not showing a landing plane, though it does show beautiful images of other planes in taxi and one about to take off. I noticed Dublin on the list of the recently updated images. Another example was of the "Plane Landing at LaGuardia ", where we now see a line up of planes about to take off, and on a quick look around I don't see anything landing.

I've seen a couple of your explanations of the "ghost" images, here among other places, and was intrigued with your recent calculation that a plane was flying at 550 mph. I assume this is from knowing the interval between the two shots, and that the apparent motion off the line of flight -- so that the "shadow" normally appears on the diagonal ahead of the brighter image -- has to do with the motion of the satellite as it shoots? This must make the calculation of speed a little more interesting than a simple distance over time calculation.

Your explanations are wonderfully clear, by the way, though I am torn between those explanations and the theory posted in another thread a few days ago (sorry that I can't find it to refer to) that the photographer up there in the satellite taking those double images may have been the same guy that took his wedding shots....

Munden an interesting find. Looks like an MD80 at very low altitude; as you say the shadow is clearly visible. There is a hard to find second exposure about 14 meters ahead indicating the plane was just around 200 mph. I hope it turned soon into Fukuoka Airport

Here is the latest update of satellite captured planes in flight. Its getting to be a large collection. We lost a couple on the last database update but with many nore new users more airacrft get discovered.

When posting planes give a location or some other unique Identification to make it easier for seaching prior posts. Thanks

Plane 1 isn't airborne yet, so I can't include that in the AIrcraft in Flight DB.

Plane 2 is airborne, but has already been collected.

Plane 3 is new and will be added to the DB.

Plane 4 has already been collected.

SInce you're obviously a keen spotter, it might be a good idea if you downloaded the latest copy of the AIrcraft in Flight files - this will help you to see where an aircraft has already been recorded. I'll be publishing an updated version in a couple of hours.

Again, could I ask you to remove any redundant placemarks.

Another small 2-engine jet, this one is heading for M�nchen Airport, Munich, Germany.

Sorry, Death, Nobrn spotted this one a few days ago

here.

If you're a serious plane spotter, then it's a good idea to download the latest copies of 2 files - Satellite Capture of Aircraft in flight, and Aerial Photography of AIrcraft in Flight. They're actually administered by AzTraveller, but I'm looking after them in his absence. An updated bersion of each file will be posted in the Transportation Section every day.

This will make sure that you can see all up-to-date placemarks, so you'll instantly know if your find is original.

The other neighbourly thing to do is, if you do accidentally duplicate a placemark, or post one in error, is to remove it, to avoid cluttering GE. I'd do it for you, but I don't have editor privileges.

Probably. It's much the same size and config as a Boeing 737, so it's hard to tell at this res. However, the A320 has the widest fuselage of any single-aisle aircraft, and it also has a definite "sting" at the rear of the fuselage, which the 737 lacks, so I reckon you're right.

In any event, it's original, and I've added it to the DB

Article on Planes Captured in Flight

I wrote a story recently about planes captured in flight for the Google Earth Blog. But, I had only linked initially to the collection for Aerial Photography. I just realized there was a separate collection for Satellite Photography here. I've added a reference for this thread and collection now to the story. You can read the story here.

Here's a 767 i think, approaching Palma de Mallorca Airport, Spain.
It may be the one posted by MarcoBorst here, but he forgot to placemark it.

@Frank: I do sleep, but I'm unemployed at the moment, so I've got lots of time for planespotting.

Port Arthur, TX plane off beach

Here's a nice plane with shadow. So often there's no plane anymore on these posts. This one was found on 9/23/2005. I was looking at this area because of Hurricane Rita. I also found lots of ships in this photo. Check out the ship that is pulling something. You can see some oil rigs too.

This one's already been discovered by Clorius, here.

When you're plane-spotting for aircraft in flight it can save you time and effort if you download the files "Satellite Capture of Aircraft in Flight" and "AerialPhotography of Aircraft in Flight" These are updated every day, so if you have these in "My Places" and enabled you can instantly tell if the aircraft has been seen before.

If you post a placemark which is either a duplicate or in error, the neighbourly thing to do is to remove it - this saves GE from becoming cluttered with duplicate placemarks and wrong information. I haven't got editor's privileges, otherwise I would do it for you.
