Nazca Lines

There was a request for some higher resolution on the West Coast of Peru. More specifically for the area of the Nazca Plain. Well instead of waiting for the aircraft to do a pass or two, I went off and found some NASA, Landsat TM imagery. There are 4 overlays, each getting a little closer. Overlay 1 being the lowest resolution and overlay 4, the highest res.
For more info, go to Wikipedia.

To learn more about the area and lines, use your favorite search engine:
"Nazca Plains"
"Nazca Lines"

The underlying Google Earth data is now higher resolution than the overlays

Re: Nazca Lines #4

Very nice. Oddly enough I was looking for Nazca the other day. I've attached a placemark that zooms in to what looks like the spider pattern. (see Spider )

New Data

Well, that's what happens in a world of updated data. The new data is better than my overlays, which were better than the old 1 km data.

How about a link to some good info about the Nazca Plain .

In this other thread about Nazca lines, I posted an overlay made form a detailed map of the area, and pinpointed the location of some specific figures. It would be nice to visit in person some day.

Thank you for the link, Gro. Those pix are precisely what I was trying to find. Too bad GooglEarth doesn't have high enough resolution of the area. Oh well, I note that it's getting better and better - maybe one of these days...

You all might want to take a look at my Nazca Lines overlay. Instead of that one large picture, which gets blurry when you zoom in, this one is made of individual pictures.

Here it is

Check out the Nazca plains now, since this recent update. Here's the only figure I can identify from the new data, the hummingbird.
And whats the deal with all the circles chained together? They're everywhere!

Good eyes, nobu, but bad info. You don't need GE4 to see the lines now, it's a result of the updated database.

While cruising the Nazca plains i found what i believe to be an undiscovered astronaut drawing. By following the lines I found this at 14 47 54 82 and 75 00 45 15. Also seems to be something 2 arroyos NE of this area. Can anyone confirm what I am seeing?

Airplane over Nazca

Not really one of the geoglyphs but I thought this was really interesting. You can see an airplance flying over the Nazca lines and because of the photography delay, the shadow is fairly far behind the plane.

Re: Nazca hummingbird

The response to your circles chained together might possibly be a very sad and infuriating one.
I would go so far as to say some enthusiastic young Peruvians got together with powerful cars and bikes and do-nutted all over the place. You can see a little south of your marker that someone has tried to create an insect of some sort, and the double tyre lines to make the wings are clearly visible, even with the low resolution.
Whilst this area is of international interest, it is open desert and obviously the government of Peru doesn't see the need to protect it properly. I guess it is only a matter of time before they stop trying to create their own symbols and decide to "add" to the existing symbols. This would indeed be a truly great loss.

Re: Nazca hummingbird

Adding to my previous post, you can even see looking at some of the famous lines in the vicinity of the donuts that the actual lines themselves seem to have been used as drag strips, ruining the original and untouched ancient surface that may have yielded clues about the creation of these lines.
Any of you guys in the USA might want to write to your government, senators or local politicians to see if pressure can be put on Peru to protect this area better.

Re: Nazca Mandala

Here's the Nazca Mandala.

The Mandala is extremely remote and sits atop an arid mountain plateau. The image appears to have been carved with exceptional precision. A large square measures 180 feet across while an inner circle spans the same diameter. Several smaller squares, about 20 feet wide, appear to have been etched in the landscape along with an assortment of stategically placed holes.

The smaller circle should be to the lower left of the main circle.

I took the same photo last year.
