Real time GPS tracking

I have written a real time GPS tracker. It's a 600k server which resides on your own PC. I have attached a sample of the output.

2 questions.
Am I allowed to post an executable?

Is anyone interested?

regards

John Scott

Real time GPS tracking - Server Attached

First
This is PM ware. If you try it and it works (or doesn't) please send me a PM to tell me you are happy (or unhappy). If you think you need to send money then donate it to your favourite childrens charity. PM me a picture of their smiling faces.

Second
It is very very beta. Very little testing. Very little error handling. But it should not harm your computer.
I have run it on w98, XP and 2000 and all seem to work. Nothing is written to the registry. To uninstall just delete.

It is very basic. Decodes NMEA strings $GPGGA (lat, lon and altitude) and $GPRMC for your current course. If your device doesn't output the sentences then tell me what they do putput. The view is centred on your current position, directly above your current position and rotated to your course. The default placemark is used.

The software was developed using an eTrex legend for the NMEA input.
Read the readme.txt inside the zip for instruction.

enjoy

John Scott

Re: Real time GPS tracking - Server Attached

Sounds good,
But it didn't work to me.
I have a eTrex (the yellow), put it on NMEA OUT mode.
I checked in mapsource, the com port was com2. so I selected that.
But when I select "connect" nothing happens. I mean, The long-lat in the large box doesn't change.
What is wrong?

Re: Real time GPS tracking - Server Attached

check the ini file after you shut down.
If lat and lon are 0.00 then the etrex is not locked up.

Try putting the etrex in demo mode.

See post below entitled Real Time GPS Tracking - Server attached.

I don't know anything about bluetooth. If it can pretend to be a serial port then it should work.

Re: Real time GPS tracking - Server Attached

This server software appears to be extremely useful, although it's not parsing the NMEA data from my Garmin receiver. I've already written NMEA parsing libraries for linux, and could pretty easily resolve this issue if you would include the source code along with the binary. I'm sure this little piece of software could become very useful, I can also post it on one of my servers or sourceforge it if you're willing. Thanks.

It sounds like you already have a server running on your machine.
Shut your server down and try again

Re: Real time GPS tracking - Server Attached

Thank you for the advice
will take a look what kind of server shoud run on my notebook .
Ok found the problem when skpe is runing than your Server give the error
out .if i stop skype (www.skype.com) than it starts fine .
Now just additional COm port would be fine too use it with my bluetooth GPS comunicate via Bluetooth Stick.

Bute one more sugestion
If your server could also chek the COM port tll 16 or beter till 36
than you can bind the Bluetooth GPS witch cominicate over USB dongels
Bluetooth is on
COM15
COm16
COM17
COM21
Com25
Com31
COM35
COM36
Depends on witch USB Port i conekt the Bluetooth Stick.
I think you would help out a loot of peopel wich register on errth plus
to get GPS support and than realise that it dont work .
Best wisches from vienna Austria

If you have a GPS reciever and it is connected to a portable computer, and both are moving, and the computer is running Google Earth, you can see a placemark on the map indicating where you are.

Re: Working?

Ivanavitch...Great software. Got it working fairly quickly with a Magellan Sportstrak Map. Using a usb/serial cable at 4800. I like the new executable with the nmea string. Shows me things are working. I have a question about the range slider. I can't seem to get closer than say 3000 ft when I change it. I havn't tried it when i'm "mobile" yet, as I don't have an internet connection when I'm in my car. (Working on that..I have a blackberry that I should be able to get working..if Cingular will help). Anyway...Again..great code and nice work. Look forward to future enhancements and consider me when you are looking for beta testers.

Thanks
Andy

USB GPS reciever: Real time GPS tracking

I'm trying to get my system set up - does it work with a USB GPS reciever? Mine is microsoft brand, but i'm sure it's made by pharos. . .

How would i determine what com port to select?

Thanks for making this - it's brilliant!

Can you confirm if the next version will support additional COM ports ?

I have a Bluetooth Serial Port (COM6) connected Tom Tom GPS. The device outputs NMEA fine to other apps but would very much wish to utilise it with GE as well.

Thx

Re: Real time GPS tracking - Server Attached

Always willing to help.

Is anyone hav ing troubles with "XX is not an integer". I think there are some GPSs out there which output rogue NMEA sentences. If anyone gets this fault, could they please post or PM me a text dump of their NMEA stream (capture in hyperterminal). I would also like details of their GPS model please.

How many com ports do blue tooth items support?

I downloaded the tracker, unzipped it to a folder, hooked up my Garmin 60CS to the USB port, started the kml-file------but nothing happened except an errormessage from the dynamic link in GE. Did I do something wrong? Maybe I need a serial conection?

Your Garmin should have come with virtual COM port support with the USB driver. You need to make sure the driver is installed and the virtual COM port is active. You can also try the tracker in my signature. It does basically the same thing but has a more detailed connection status that might help you figure out what is going on.

The output from the GPS has to be NMEA (serial). Garmin don't seem to be supporting NMEA in their latest offerings.

sorry about that.

The 60CS does support NMEA - just not through USB, you must use the serial connection.
