Space center in Baikonur originated as a test launch site for the R-7 ICBM developed at Sergei Korolev's design bureau. The original facilities of the test range founded in 1955 included a single launch pad at Site 1, and an assembly building, known as MIK-2, located at Site 2. The processing area and the launch pad were connected by a railway.

The first R-7 rocket blasted off from Site 1 in Tyuratam on May 15, 1957. The world's first artificial satellite was launched from the same pad on October 4, 1957. After the launch of the first manned spacecraft, Vostok-1, in 1961, the pad at Site 1 was nicknamed "Gagarinskiy Start" (Gagarin's pad).

The complex remained operational at the turn of the 21st century after it has hosted more than 400 launches.

(....) On Aug. 6, 2000, the rocket booster carying the Progress M1-3 toward the International Space Station became the 400th vehicle, taking off from Site 1.

Sputnik with payload PS2

On the 4th of October 1957 the intercontinental ballistic missile 8K71 was for the first time used as a launch vehicle for delivering the first artificial satellite of the Earth into orbit. This launch vehicle was named “Sputnik” and designated as 8K71-PS. The first stage consists of four blocks, which are identical in construction and mounted around the second stage block according to parallel schema. The engines of the first and second stages are ignited simultaneously on the Earth. A warhead was dismounted from the regular military missile as well as all equipment of flight control system together with module, where this system was located. Instead this module a light cone adapter module was mounted to locate there a flight control system. The “Sputnik” (8K71-PS) was successfully launched two times to deliver artificial satellites PS-1 and PS-2 into orbit.

Re: Soyuz - Sputnik

Joey, these models just get better. And with the new version the whole structures move as easy as can be. None of that jerkiness that happened with GE3/Sketchup1. Thanks for another great one.

Re: Soyuz - re_Animated

This animation loads quicker and runs much smoother with the new GE release 4.3.7204.0836 (beta).

Check out Burner View and Low , High Altitude views while animation is running.

Animations are greatly enhanced with the new GE version.
