Community Mapping Experiment -- European Subways
|
Would you like the opportunity to participate in a unique Google Earth Community mapping experiment? And would you like to help make Google Earth even more useful to users around the world?
If you answered yes, here's how you can help:
Currently, Google Earth does not show you the locations of subway stations around the world. If, for example, you're in Sydney, Australia, and planning a trip to Paris, France, you would find it very useful to know just how far away the nearest Métro station is from the hotel you booked.
Well, what better way to find out than to ask someone who knows?
Together, as a community, you guys constitute an incredibly knowledgable, enthusiastic resource for exactly this kind of information. So we'd like to try a little experiment.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to map the locations of subway stations for 9 city centers in 4 countries:
GERMANY
- Berlin
- Hamburg
- Munich
FRANCE
- Paris
SPAIN
- Madrid
- Barcelona
ITALY
- Rome
- Milan
- Naples
Some of you may relish the thought of doing some detective work. Others amongst you may have local knowledge. So, let's put our collective heads together and get mapping!
There is only one rule here: accuracy. Let's nail each and every subway station in these countries. Feel free to check each other's work, offer corrections, and provide missing locations.
I'll pin this thread to the top of the forum so we can all find it easily.

I took all the stations of the Munich Subway fron the post of don_riina, sorted them alphabetically and added paths for the lines, so you can see where you can go without changing trains. Also added a link to the english Web-page of the Munich Transportation (MVV).
Also added custom icons like the signs shown for the U- and S-Bahn.

When you say accuracy, do you then mean real life coordinates or "accurately" placed on the GE map? They do not always match. In Berlin for instance, the map is off by about 20 meters.

To have...well yes, indeed you had those, but someone else did put in a lot of hardwork putting those together....notably myself and Simon.

I think you don't have to be that accurate.
You would need this kind of exactness only if you want to post not only the stations but also every entrance to the stations. I think, this would make the placemarks much too crowded.
To give an idea of what I mean, I attached a folder with placemarks for all the entrances to one one single station (Karlsplatz, Munich, Germany).

European Subways: Vienna
|
As "wuz" already pointed out, the Vienna stations are already done.The KML is future-proof until 2010. If you are interested only in stations already opened to the public, pls. tell me.

It would be nice if you note in the description (or in the placemark names) if a station is not yet open. If you know the scheduled opening time (month? year?) it couldbe very helpful for people visiting. (maybe even color coding the icons according to opening years?)

Hi there,
This is a good idea, to tap into the knowledge of people on here. Let me tell you, though, that on Google Earth Hacks , there are already lots of metro maps posted (some better than others). For example, I've done a good map of Mexico City and Guadalajara, and there are lots of other good ones (Brazil, European, etc). Why are efforts being split or duplicated? Go have a look there!

Well, London is in Europe, isn't it?
And who is interested in what always depends on where you want to go. There are even quite a lot of Americans who visit Europe.
Why not start a seperate Project "Subways in America" or extend this project to subways of the world? You could start with Los Angeles, it is only one line with 16 stations.

Subways map upgraded
What I've done is actually a draft. If You know smth about 2005-2006 current LRT status, please improve my map!
I've seen on the satellite photo dozen of new lines not marked on maps, also dozens of construction works. I've got only future maps with proposals for 2010 which show these lines and no actual maps that reflect this dramatic changes in system expansion
Built the first line in 1995 Shanghai's subway is now one of the biggest in the world and most complicated one..
System is expanding so quickly that probably satellite images are newer than newest awailable maps of Shanghai.
If You live in Shanghai, please look if there are any bugs on my map in mini metro LRT.
Also got an info about 650 meters long pedestrain mover in downtown Shanghai. Where is it?

Just found your post here, first i want to refer you to my answer to you given to your other post about Shanghai's Metro system.
IMHO, after using the Shanghai Metro system for more than 4 years: Shanghai's current Metro system is not complicated at all and surely not the World's biggest.
The north-south Line 1 and it's southern extension Line 5 are just that - a north-south line through Shanghai.
Same applies to the east-west Line 2, also just an east-west connection, currently starting in Pudong at Longyang Road and ending at Zhongshan Park in Puxi. An extension to the west (Hongqiao airport) is under construction. After this is done, a fast public transport from Pudong airport to Hongqiao airport is given, using the Maglev and Metro Line 2. But the use can not be recommended using heavy luggage, due to the unacceptable situation at Longyang road station (Interchange from Maglev to Line 2.
Line 3 is an elevated ring line around Puxi, following mostly the track of the former connection between Shanghai's main railway station and the Shanghai south railway station.
After finishing the lines currently under construction - Line 4 (subway) and Line 8 (subway), the system will be slightly more complicated, but still not complicated at all in comparision to e.g. Berlin or London.
The mini metro LRT you called line 4 does not exist at all. May i assume you did the overlay by downloading future maps of the system from some webpages? Yes:

Your about 650 meters long pedestrain mover in downtown Shanghai is probably what's called the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel (see placemark above for entrances). Check also Shanghai Tour and the info on the Pudong Government webpage (both english) for pictures.

Completed my part. If someone knows exact location of 123 tram stops in Hong Kong downtown, or sees any bugs please fix my map.

SUBWAYS: Hong Kong-Kowloon, Shenzhen (2 lines), Guangzhou(4 lines).
intresting things - 1) subway depots under huge appartment buildings.
2) Subway stations' constructions in Shenzhen.
LRT: Kowloon KCR (3 lines)
MONORAILS: In Shenzhen's wonderland (2 lines)
interesting: monorail trains are clearly visible - blue and white ones.
FUNICULAR: Victoria Peak Tram
interesting: landscape. Obviously goes up the hill.

interesting things: Double deckers' depot clearly visible, pedestrain bridges to tram stops.

interesting - lots of bridges, tunnels, complicated terminals etc..

Nice 5MB map! Now I've got info for 2nd edition of public transportation map. Also have found a map with bus stops marked.
By the way, what is the best way to find Chinese transportation maps in the net? I've found lot of maps (f.e. www.cbooking.com), but they occasionally mark route numbers, so it's difficult to use. Only few cities I've found maps with good route and stops locations information. Is there any site with detailed citymaps of all major cities or any good keywords combinations for searching?

Please check the following link to get an accurate, new and vaild (as of time of post) map of the Shanghai subway operating lines in PDF format:

To search for maps of Chinese cities i just use Google. But i enter my search parameters in Chinese!
Most of the maps of Chinese cities on the (english language) web are outdated. If you are able to read and write Chinese, it's easy to find up-to-date electronic maps for all major cities in China.
Next problem will be that your browser is probably not able to display them correctly, as they either use Chinese filenames, or a character encoding that can not be correctly displayed using a Non-chinese web browser.
I am either using German or English Windows XP Pro with both Firefox and IE browsers, all settings are correct for displaying Chinese correctly, but i still encounter problems with some Chinese webpages.
Sorry for that news.

Dnepropetrovsk subway is really small. Defenetely not enough to satisfy the whole city's needs. Goes from Railway station into industrial zone along railroad. Will be built into downtown 2 stations not earlier then 2008.
Krivoy Rih LRT is a speed metro-tram. 3-carriages long Tram without traffic lights. Goes under ground into city centre. You can see clearly its surface line and some of the stations even on low resolution map. Very reasonable. repeats the long and narrow city shape.
