There are posters who have always been, or like me have become, real fans of the DC-3. Up until now I have discouraged posting of planes not visible from Google Earth's aerial perspective. But after some reflection I'm now adding a sub-thread entitled "Hidden DC-3's" . I'll further subdivide that into " DC-3's in Museums " and " Unresolvable DC-3's ". If you post in either, please post a link to views or information about the particular planes so that GE users who wish to see the plane can have some idea of how to find it. Click the above blue links to take you directly to the sub threads. The 70th Anniversary of the DC-3's first flight was December 17, 2005 There is a link to a page when the Douglas DC-3 celebrated its 60th Anniversary HERE. As I've searched airports and air museums around the world, the most likely easily recognizable plane I see is the Douglas DC-3 or one of its variants. . From high altitude, even from space, the distinctive DC-3 stands out. The shape of the wing and tail is distinctive. A few other planes, included in this thread and in the placemark folder look similar. Source ...space... DC-3 dimensions are approx 95' wingspan and 65' length. Image from www.wmof.com The first one flew in 1935; many still fly today. With the help of other DC-3 fans the folder attached here contains many hundreds of placemarks. This post includes all DC-3 placemarks to date in one folder. If you think you have a new one, download the attached placemark folder first. All finds to the time of the update are in it. If there is no placemark on your find, it's a new one. Check the edited by Hill information at the very bottom of this post for the time of the latest update. Anything posted to this thread after that date is quite new and has not yet been added to the big folder. It will be soon. There are undoubtedly more out there. So if you find one, attach it as a reply, or send me the coordinates by private message if you prefer (I'll credit you with the find when I add it to the folder. ). I'll bet we can find a lot more of them. Happy hunting. Network link: If you wish you can go to THIS POST created by Valery35. Here's another for the list. It's a C-47 at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile AL. The park in addition to the USS Alabama (BB-60) has a really good collection of historic military aircraft. Most are indors in the hangar including a P-51D, F4U, and an F-105 as well as a YF-17 (the prototype of the F/A-18). They also have an SR-71. At the time that the images were captured it was indors as well, but it spends most of it's time parked outside these days. If they ever update the Mobile AL images in the database it may show up here as well. This is a great Military park, I highly encourage everyone to take time to visit it if they ever find themselves in the area. Well worth the $10 admission. The USS Alabama is wonderfully preserved and has the only 16" turret barbette (the handling and loading areas beneath the turret) open to public display. 30 40 57.53, -88 00 59.58 |

Close, but not quite, 64. But all is not lost. A little to the northwest of your placemark is a somewhat worse-for-wear DC-3 hiding among the other non operational planes. It is placemarked here and in the updated collection downloadable from the initial post. Also added to the initial post is a profile plan showing the characteristic swept leading edge and straight trailing edge of the DC-3 wing. |

There are a couple of other golden oldies (aircraft) on show here. If you move upwards along the buildings on the left of the screen, you will see a large twin engined transport aircraft. Just in front of it and closer to the building you will see a blue/grey twin engined jet. This is an English Electric Canbera, the worlds first jet bomber. The cambera first flew in 1947, and at one time held the world altitude record. Continue upwards until you see a four engined aircraft with twin tail fins, It is on what looks like a part raised square area. This aircraft is an Avro Shackleton, a direct decendant from the RAF's Lancaster bomber. The Shackleton served in Britain's coastal command. It was later converted to become the RAF's first Airborne early warning Radar aircraft. Best wishes, Countryboy. |

Quote: You are very close, but the "grey one" is actually a B-23A Dragon bomber, based upon the B-18 Bolo bomber, which was based on the DC-2. Good eye there. When it's a C-46 like this one. The placemark for a C-46 at Oxnard, CA is included with the DC-3 collection so you can compare it. The Commemorative Air Force SoCal web page has the story its C-46. www.wpafb.af.mil/museum The Curtiss C-46 Commando has lines very similar to the Douglas DC-3, especially when seen from above. The one distinction visible at our resolutions is the horizontal stabilizer, which has a different shape. The DC-3 and its variants have a tail shaped more or less like this--> / | while the C-46 tail is more like this--> / \ For more about the C-46 see this web page and this one. |
