Beaches:Khao Lak OPEN PLACEMARK Khao Lak An hour's drive north of Phuket airport , this strip of medium-fine yellow sand and clear sea is little developed, with no buildings over two stories and mostly good quality bungalows scattered under the palms and casuarinas [a kind of fir tree] beside the beach. The beach is winding, narrow in parts and has character, with rocky outcrops and a lovely cluster of stlit bars and restaurants at one end. Waves can be a problem for small children, especially at the start of the season, i.e. December/January. The bungalows aren't cheap but the location - Andaman Sea on one side, wildlife-rampant rainforest the other, and Thailand's scuba superb Similan islands 64 km offshore makes them worthwhile. Tour groups haven't got here yet, tho' plenty of North Europeans have. The one horse town of Khao Lak provides basic shops and restaurants. Best time Nov-March, but showers may happen anytime. |

Pantai Teluk Belanga [Emerald Bay], Pangkor Laut OPEN PLACEMARK Emerald Bay, on a tiny, privately owned island off Malaysia's west coast, is often listed in the top ten world's best beaches. The bay is a perfect crescent shape, with soft golden sand and calm emerald-green water. This is the property of the luxury Pangkor Laut Resort, where only guests can enjoy its elegant facilities, so is totally hawker[seller] free. In spite of its commercial success, most of the island remains untouched, with plenty of wildness and natural beauty just outside this sophisticated resort. It is an all-year destination, but the best time to be there is Jan-May. Oct-Dec can be wet and grey.

Tulum, on the Caribbean coast Click Here Open Placemark One of the prettiest beaches in the world, with picturesque Mayan ruins overlooking the beach. 130 km south of a massive resort of Cancún, it is a tiny but perfectly-formed white sandy cove, with a few palm shade and the azure Caribbean sea to swim in. The entrance to Tulum is totally touristy, with a huge car park, souvenir shops, café and restaurants. There is no place to stay on the spot, but there are a few hotels and restaurants in Tulum village and also [far better option] plenty of resort type places, cabañas [beach huts] and campsites along the coast road south to Punta Allen. Australia: Whitsunday Islands, [boat required, inexpensive accommodation possible Open PLACEMARK The closest thing to the Caribbean in Australia, the Whitsunday's 74 islands have squeaky white beaches, turquoise water and pine clad hills. Seven islands host resort hotels of all kinds but with a common marine theme - fishing, sailing, whale watching, castaway picnics, you want it, they got it. Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island tops Australia's 'Best Beaches' list, with 6km of powder sand, sandwiched between tropical forest and clear blue water. There are no hotels or restaurants but plenty of cheap camping options on this island. A camping permit is needed, available from mainland Airlie Beach. Most visitors are day-trippers from other islands [e.g. Hamilton]. Beware dangerous marine creatures, especially the jellies. Best: April - Nov. Jan-March gets some rain, December is hot and crowded. Scuba divers like Sept-Dec REFERENCE

Belize, Placencia open placemark This is a totally laid-back seaside town, with a pristine sandy beach on a long, narrow peninsula in SE Belize. It is is well worth the trip to get there [4-5 hours from Belize City, but now daily domestic flights are available. Facilities are simple but comfortable. Apart from just lying on the sand, you can do various water sports, fishing, bird watching, manatee watching [!] and jungle excursions in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. If you want more action [especially diving], try the Cayes; resort-oriented Ambergris Caye, or relatively low-key Caye Caulker. Best Beaches:Kolocep Island [Adriatic Sea] Click Here for Placemark Croatia: Kolocep is one of the Elafiti islands which lie along the Adriatic coastline, opposite Dubrovnik at the southern end of the country. It has some of the loveliest, secluded beaches in Europe. The most famous beach in Croatia is Zlatni Rat [Golden Horn] beach on the Dalmatian island of Brac. The down side: the standard of facilities are not as high as western resorts, and despite the area's rich fishing industry [shellfish of the Adriatic are said to be some of the best in the world], the cuisine does not have a high reputation. Best May-Sept, though July-August can be crowded and swimming in the sea is only comfortable from mid-June to late September.

Natal, Rio Grande Norte State Click for placemark Natal, inelegant, but 'the city of the sun' sees more than 300 days of sunshine a year and has some of the best stretches of sand in South America, including good lively city beaches - but beware the surf. Phuket Island beaches,Thailand Click Here Open Placemark best time Nov-March. Worst May-Oct [rough seas and winds Phuket is one of the world's most famous international resort islands. It is the largest, the most expensive and the most touristy of all Thailand's islands, with busy sand and an international airport. Portugal: Algarve Beach Please Click Here For Placemark Portugal: Algarve Excellent beaches though not attractive away from the seaside. Bugbog's picks are Ilha de Tavira for massive sand and little old town, and Lagos area for varied superb beaches with sophisticated old town in support. Albufeira is popular with low cost sun-seekers. Portugal's east coast also has many huge soft-sand stretches, though the waves are often brutal so it's very popular with sufers and wind surfers. Guincho, near Cascais is beautiful and popular, and beaches around Ericeira deliver a lot of white water in memorable surroundings, though the town has lost its cool. |

It's unclear if the beach is "the best option." It depends what you want. If you want to be near the water and socialize almost entirely with other foreigners on vacation, then the beach is the place for you. All the Mexicans you'll meet here will be in a working in tourism and will be paid to do what you ask: bring a new margaria, clean your sheets, organize a visit to a nature preserve. Some tourists like to have the dark-skinned locals always in a subservient relationship to them. For them, the beach is that place to be. On the other hand, if you're interested in the people of Mexico, then you should try the village. It is much less touristy since it's a town for people who live and work in the area. Still, there are restaurants, Internet cafes etc, that cater to both Mexicans and foreigners. You certainly won't be a pioneer: this is a village closely tied to the tourism industry, and everyone is used to seeing foreigners all over. The attractions of the village? Well, you can actually speak with Mexicans about their ordinary lives. Most of the people in the village are bilingual in Maya and in Spanish. If you're type of traveler (not tourist) who takes an interest in the host culture, then try hanging out in the village. |

Larvotto Beach, Monte Carlo, Monaco Open Placemark Perhaps the single most decadently glamorous beach in the world is Monte Carlo's Larvotto Beach, where women may go without their bikini tops, but wouldn't dare to be seen without their jewels. In fact, Larvotto's diamond-studded visitors are about the only thing that can compete with the sparkling Mediterranean water lapping along the sandy shore. Pretty as it is, Larvotto's best feature may be its proximity to all the things that make Monaco a magnet for the rich and famous. Because the entire principality covers just 1 square mile, nearly everything is within walking distance , which adds to Monaco's already intimate feel. But while it may be small, with its mouth-watering culinary options, its glut of luxury hotels, adrenaline-pumping night life and ultra-elite crowd, Monaco has all the action and excitement demanded by those who like to live life in the fast lane. If it all seems too good to be true, you may be on to something. Larvotto is actually a man-made beach, with fresh white sand constantly shipped in to offset Mother Nature's best erosion efforts. Fake or not, the entire principality is so gorgeous and charged with energy that you won't care who made its most famous strip of sand. |

Best Beaches:Santa Marta Colombia --->Please Click Here For Placemark<---- Founded in 1525 by Roger de Bastidas, Santa Marta is ideally located for visits to the Santa Marta mountain range, second in height only to the Andes running through Colombia and two national parks. While it doesn't have some of the tourism infrastructure of Cartagena down the coast, it has warm, clean beaches, many in Tayrona, or Tairona, park. Santa Marta, on Colombia's Caribbean coast, boasts a fine natural harbor (see photo) and splendid views, but that's only part of the reason the Spaniards chose it for their first settlement. Their choice was influenced by gold. The local Tairona indigenous communities were known for their goldsmithing work. ![]() Now, the Tairona Heritage Studies Centre is devoted to the study of the indigenous groups which inhabit the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. |

At the northern end of Montezuma is Playa Grande, a 3 km expanse of white sand. Walking another 4 km along the pristine coast brings you to the Cocalitos waterfall, where fresh water cascades off an escarpment into lava rock swimming pools and then into the ocean. Instead of walking, you could also make the trip riding on horseback along the beach. Midway to the Cocalitos waterfalls you can have a break for cold drinks in a small beach bar where tame coatis hang around. And if you are dreaming of a seamless sun tan you can dispense with your bathing suite in the adjacent secluded cove.

The name was eventually truncated to "Puerto Las Peñas" ("Port Las Peñas") meaning "Port the Rocks." The original reason for the port was to enable the transshipment of silver from nearby mines. In 1918, the village was elevated to municipality status and renamed after former state governor Ignacio L. Vallarta. reference |

San Luis Beach Colombia This is the largest island of the archipelago and has 26 Kms² with a maximum altitude of 100 Mts. San Luis is one of the native districts of the Island, with wooden houses and Caribbean architecture. In the past it was the main port where coconuts were shipped out and merchandise was brought in. There are lovely beaches in this district, as well as some well known hotels and restaurants which blend in perfectly with the local architecture. HENRY MORGAN´S CAVE The infamous pirate Henry Morgan was resident in the archipelago and it was from here that he planned various assaults on galleons laden with gold destined for Europe. It hasn't been established exactly where his treasure was hidden, but some islanders affirm that it was in morgan´s cave, a small deep lake within a cave of coral rock. San Andrés is English, Spanish, reggae and salsa music, crystal waters and the scene of various sports. San Andrés is as well an irresistible shopping center, the peaceful world of lush countryside, trees, flowers and fruits. An archipelago of 21 islands it is a natural paradise, boasting a diverse range of flora and fauna that has enticed famous naturalists from all around the world, including Charles Darwin. Even scientists agree the island's watery environs are a gem: Considered a marine ecological reserve, Fernando de Noronha is protected by the government. Sarasota Key was changed to Siesta Key in 1907, but It wasn't until 10 years later that the new Siesta Bridge opened up the island to any significant development. Mrs. Potter Palmer and her family visited Sarasota in 1910. They liked the location so much, they decided to purchase some 80,000 acres in the area which was at that time part of south Manatee County. She established her cattle ranch called "Meadow Sweet Pastures" after building her home named "The Oaks" on the old Webb property on Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey. John and Charles Ringling, of the famous circus family, invested in Sarasota property two years later, just a year before Sarasota was incorporated as a city on May 13, 1913. |

Barcelona, Spain: Best Urban Beach Overview When travelers think of hitting Europe's beaches, images of quiet coastal towns and revered beach resorts normally come to mind. Wouldn't it be great to have the beach option coupled with the culture and sightseeing that a big European city has to offer? Visitors to Barcelona can have their urban sightseeing and big-city fun, with a little beach time thrown in on the side. And after a day of traipsing around town to take in the best of the city, what better way to unwind than on the beach? If you're looking for miles of untouched white sands and crystalline waters coupled with snazzy beach resorts and lots of underwater activities, this is not the spot for you. What you will find is a wide stretch of coarse sand packed with hip twenty-somethings and teens strutting along the beach in the tiniest bikinis. You can also expect to find clean sand and clean water (tested daily). In Barcelona, the most popular urban beach is Platja Barcelona at Vila Olímpica, the home of the 1992 Olympics. Another nearby beach is Platja de Sant Sebastià. Both beach areas have lifeguards to watch over swimmers, areas for the kids to play and showers where you can clean up before heading to a nearby restaurant for some tapas. A trip to Platja de la Mar Bella might get you more than you hoped for, as this is the city's nudist beach. Even while relaxing on the beach, it's important to keep in mind that you're in the city and not at a small beach town — be mindful of your personal belongings and don't REFERENCE |

Bahia Honda Bahia Honda In more modern times, the park was part of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway holdings. The railroad to Key West was started in 1905 and was jokingly referred to as "Flagler’s Folly." It was eventually completed in 1912 but later destroyed by a hurricane in 1935. The railroad remains were converted into what is known today as U.S. Highway 1. Presently, the Old Bahia Honda Bridge serves as a reminder of Flagler’s dream. The bridge offers visitors a panoramic view of the island and surrounding waters. Since the initial purchase of the first 13 acres of the park in 1961, Bahia Honda has become well-known as a recreational treasure in the Keys.
