Vassar College Educational Tools
This is a location to upload KMLs and KMZs that are useful to the Vassar College community. I will try to put in the Subject line the name of the project or class that the KML is useful for.
If you need help with Google Earth, want to create a KML or KMZ, want me to create a Google Earth map, or want to load a KML in this space, just let me know. email: mestewart or phone: x7708
Enjoy! Meg

Vassar Farm Trails - 1997
Here are some trails collected back in about 1997 by Troy Welty using a big Trimble GPS receiver. Some of the trails have changed substantialy, but it gives an idea where the trails sort of exist.

This is the Casperkill watershed basin.

Atlantic Ocean -1562
An English professor used this 1562 map from Library of Congress Maps web site in a class, though she didn't use Google Earth. I made a quick KMZ out of it, to see if she'd like to use that in the future.
The cartographer is Diego Gutiérrez and the description says "Americae sive qvartae orbis partis nova et exactissima descriptio / avtore Diego Gvtiero Philippi Regis Hisp. etc. Cosmographo ; Hiero. [deleted] excvde 1562 ; Hieronymus [deleted] excude cum gratia et priuilegio 1562."

Vassar College Campus (parking lots)

A recent student did a nice job of mapping/digitizing the paved sections of the Vassar campus. Here are three of the things she mapped. The first is Parking .

Re: Vassar Farm (vegetation)
More work from Troy Welty. This is Farm Vegetation that has been somewhat generalized fromTroy's original mapping. Note that the projection is slighlty off from what it should be; you can tell this from the middle of the map where the experimental plots are located. Use this as a guide but not as the holy grail of farm vegetation.

Re: Casperkill Project (ammonium)
Hi folks, This is a bar graph of Avg concentration of Ammonium, collected July 18, 2006, by Joanna and TJ. I made this using GE Graph . I got the data from your Blackboard site.
There are two data points that I had trouble with - TA Bridge (didn't see a data point for that) and Above Sunset Lake (the software didn't want a negative number.) I put zeros in for both of those points. But you'll get the idea of what can be done with GE Graph.

Greenland

Hello ACS,
On Image Overlays my advice is: Don't try to do places near the poles. Greenland didn't work too well.

These are depth readings taken by Marshall Pregnall's BIOL-356 class in Oct 2006. Depths are in meters .

Barbados
This is a compilation of some maps that I found for the squash team's visit to Barbados in January 2007. There isn't much out there in the way of detailed GIS data. This includes three image overlays and three line KMLs (major roads (already available through Google Earth), railroad, and contour lines). I'll keep searching before the team takes off!

Barbados Older Maps
This KMZ has five maps of Barbados from the 1800, 1700 and 1600s that I've compiled into one file. Remember to turn the transparency off and on to view each map. Three of these maps I got from the terrific David Rumsey map site.

Re: Barbados Older Maps (part 1)

These two KMZs have five maps of Barbados from the 1800, 1700 and 1600s. I couldn't upload one KMZ so I split the thing into two. Remember to turn the transparency off and on to view each map. Three of these maps I got from the terrific David Rumsey map site.

Hurricane tracks - Atlantic
I got this file of hurricane tracks from Prof. Brian McAdoo, so I'm not sure of the original source. He describes it to students as looking like a "hairball." I do know that the number of tracks exceeds 37,000.

China Tour
This is a tour of the Yangtze River. It's a work in progress that I wanted to get done before a talk. I didn't quite make it. But I've created a "tour" of the river by placing placemarks along the bends in the river. The blue lines are the Yangtze and the Huang He rivers and they came from an ESRI shapefile; they're very coarse.
Jan 19, 2007: I took the KML off of here because it wasn't what I wanted it to be. I will work on it and upload it when it's 'done.'

Budapest
This is a KMZ of some flat maps of Budapest . This file is over 25MB, so I've stored it on my own server space. It's huge because I didn't want to lose the detail when I scanned the maps. Hope this works on this site.
https://vspace.vassar.edu/mestewart/Epstein/Budapest.kmz
I made another similar one for Prague and will make one for Berlin.

Re: East Asia Geography (East Asia Tour)
This set of placemarks combines a few that were created by Prof. Yu Zhou. Some modifications of existing tours (for the Yangtze River in China, Korea, and Japan) were incorporarated into this final version. These modifications and the tour itself was created by Yu Zhou Jan 25, 2007.

Re: Prague (old maps)
This is a KMZ of two old maps of Prague (1743 and 1895). The sources for the maps is listed for both of the map layers. This was created for Prof. Marc Michael Epstein on Jan 29, 2007.
Berlin
This is a KMZ of some flat maps of Berlin . Somehow I managed to make this KMZ much smaller than those for Prague and Budapest. I used an older version of Photoshop and could save to all manner of file formats; that was a plus.
As indicated, I made another similar KMZs for Budapest and Prague but you'll need to grab it from my server space..

Re: Berlin - Old maps

These maps of Berlin are from 1798, 1812, and 1908. The individual image layers will tell you where I get the maps. Created for Prof. Marc Epstein on Feb 2, 2007.

Utah, Hurricane fault
This is a KML I put together after seeing some beautiful placemarks assembled by the Utah Geological Survey.
http://geology.utah.gov/google_earth/kml_kmz/ugs_geosights.kmz
My KML shows the section of the Hurricane fault in southwestern Utah that I mapped in 1993 with some annotations.

Geology

Here are some terrific examples of using Google Earth to help teach geoscience or geomorphology. I made this quickly and looked for examples only in the US but there must be beautiful locations all over the world suitable for teaching about concepts in the earth sciences.

Water Cycle placemarks

Oil refineries

These oil refineries are in Louisiana (Cancer Alley) and in New Jersey. This KML is to augment some lecture topics on carbon and oil.

Mines

There are three open pit mine locations here that I'll talk about in class: Morenci, AZ (copper), Lead, SD (gold), and Mirny, Russia (diamonds).

Volcanoes

Placemarks of the locations from the volcano exercise from "Exploring Environmental Science with GIS." We're using Google Earth because the latest version of ArcExplorer does not read our DEMs for this exercise.

Hyde Park - Digital Underground
The Hyde Park KMLs were collected for a class taught by Prof. Brian McAdoo (http://computing.vassar.edu/news/faculty/facultyfocus/mcadoo.html). For each KML I used ArcMap 9.2 and the export to KML tool. This first one is bedrock geology.
