Vassar College Educational Tools

This is a location to upload KMLs and KMZs that are useful to the Vassar College community. I will try to put in the Subject line the name of the project or class that the KML is useful for.

If you need help with Google Earth, want to create a KML or KMZ, want me to create a Google Earth map, or want to load a KML in this space, just let me know. email: mestewart or phone: x7708

Enjoy!
Meg

Vassar Farm Trails - 1997

Here are some trails collected back in about 1997 by Troy Welty using a big Trimble GPS receiver. Some of the trails have changed substantialy, but it gives an idea where the trails sort of exist.

Atlantic Ocean -1562

An English professor used this 1562 map from Library of Congress Maps
web site in a class, though she didn't use Google Earth. I made a quick KMZ out of it, to see if she'd like to use that in the future.

The cartographer is Diego Gutiérrez and the description says "Americae sive qvartae orbis partis nova et exactissima descriptio / avtore Diego Gvtiero Philippi Regis Hisp. etc. Cosmographo ; Hiero. [deleted] excvde 1562 ; Hieronymus [deleted] excude cum gratia et priuilegio 1562."

Re: Vassar Farm (vegetation)

More work from Troy Welty. This is Farm Vegetation that has been somewhat generalized fromTroy's original mapping. Note that the projection is slighlty off from what it should be; you can tell this from the middle of the map where the experimental plots are located. Use this as a guide but not as the holy grail of farm vegetation.

Re: Casperkill Project (ammonium)

Hi folks,
This is a bar graph of Avg concentration of Ammonium, collected July 18, 2006, by Joanna and TJ. I made this using GE Graph . I got the data from your Blackboard site.

There are two data points that I had trouble with - TA Bridge (didn't see a data point for that) and Above Sunset Lake (the software didn't want a negative number.) I put zeros in for both of those points. But you'll get the idea of what can be done with GE Graph.

Barbados

This is a compilation of some maps that I found for the squash team's visit to Barbados in January 2007. There isn't much out there in the way of detailed GIS data. This includes three image overlays and three line KMLs (major roads (already available through Google Earth), railroad, and contour lines). I'll keep searching before the team takes off!

Hurricane tracks - Atlantic

I got this file of hurricane tracks from Prof. Brian McAdoo, so I'm not sure of the original source. He describes it to students as looking like a "hairball." I do know that the number of tracks exceeds 37,000.

China Tour

This is a tour of the Yangtze River. It's a work in progress that I wanted to get done before a talk. I didn't quite make it. But I've created a "tour" of the river by placing placemarks along the bends in the river. The blue lines are the Yangtze and the Huang He rivers and they came from an ESRI shapefile; they're very coarse.

Jan 19, 2007: I took the KML off of here because it wasn't what I wanted it to be. I will work on it and upload it when it's 'done.'

This set of placemarks combines a few that were created by Prof. Yu Zhou. Some modifications of existing tours (for the Yangtze River in China, Korea, and Japan) were incorporarated into this final version. These modifications and the tour itself was created by Yu Zhou Jan 25, 2007.

This is a KMZ of some flat maps of Berlin . Somehow I managed to make this KMZ much smaller than those for Prague and Budapest. I used an older version of Photoshop and could save to all manner of file formats; that was a plus.
