Baby elephant or hippo?
|
|
Seems too fat to be a horse or cow. Shadow looks trunk-ish. Size is only 5 feet long. Possible young one. Color looks right.
EDIT: A placemark would help, LOL. Im such a noob. Thanks Tek for the heads up.

Now that ive added the placemark and looked again, I can see the head better and it has black horns, which would make it a Oxen. I messed this post all up, lmao!
Hey all, look, a rare cowish creature! *yawn*.

It must be an African cow and possibly female. But maybe not. You are right, sometimes streaming confuses us....

Possibly of more interest. Why has such small and remote area been provided in such high resolution. Not complaining, quite fascinating really.

Three goats are viewable nearby the animal in question.

There are many. These are photos by Michael Fay taken from the airplane Megaflyover. Check your National Geographic Magazine layer to see all these photos. You can get them by the red plane icons on the GE.

this name for thoses Ankole-Watusi cattle are the show-stoppers of the bovine kingdom. Medium-sized animals, with long, large-diameter horns, they attract attention wherever they appear. These regal animals can easily trace their ancestry back more than 6,000 years and have often been referred to as "cattle of kings." Have a Merry Christmas and a Googling New Year. Cheers

4 pair sandals

I believe it is a donkey, also. I found these 4 pairs of sandals outside the door in another courtyard; 2 red, one green, one purple. What an amazing microcosm! Peggy

man in alley; toy truck on roof
|

Here is a man in an alley and above him on the rooftop is a toy dumptruck! In the courtyard just East I believe I see one person staring up, and several others in a corner, one wearing a green robe. Note the fresh rushes on the roof.

I cant see a donkey from my placemark. The animal I found has long black horns angling back and is pretty fat looking. Unless donkeys have long black ears? hmm Then again before I noticed the horns I thought it was a baby elephant so what do I know...

Domesticated Eland?
|
|
The Eland is domesticated and valued for its hide, rich milk and tender flesh. It is also used as a beast of burden. The basic color is a pale beige-brown, which tends to turn gray with age.

A donkey indeed - ears clearly visible. That part of Niger is very far from the anywhere where elephants (or hippos) occur. See http://iucn.org/afesg/aed/aesr2002.html for recent maps of elephant range.

Re: Domesticated Eland?

the color suggests an older eland... but I see no horns, unless those are the lighter colored stripes on the neck, but those look to me like regular shadows caused by neck muscles. So I've come to this conclusion - it's a donkland. half eland, half donkey.
random thought - where are all the people from this area?

i think it's adonkey in a village

Re: Baby elephant or hippo?

Going in close, it has ears that belong to neither elephant or hippo. I would tend to agree with a tame Eland or other antelope.

Hate to disappoint all you guys but we are talking the middle of the Sahara Desert. It is not an elephant, not a hippo, not an eland but a donkey.

LOL that was funny, i didnt notice the name at first.
I second that compliment by Lrae, your pics are GREAT! I guess theres no doubt its a donkey. It looks very healthy. They must feed that thing well.

|
|
I think it's a horse - you can see it's manes!
|
|
Judging by the long neck - I think I can even see the manes, I think it's just a horse (or maybe a donkey because of those big ears?)
In any case, I don't think it's an elephant or a hippo, right there between those houses.
|
|
|
Horns? I think those are ears.
|
|
I think what you refer to as horns are big flappy ears. Besides, I'm pretty sure I see manes on that neck so I think it's a horse or a donkey.

I don't think it's one of them Ankhole-Whatserwoopdeedoop things that Majoska said. I think it's cattle but maybe something more like this:

EDIT: OR, following the advice of no_stranger it it is probably an Eland.

I'd say it was a horse or an eland.

Did anyone take into consideration that it may be large piles of salt, since this is a picture of a 'salt city'?
|

|
Re: Baby elephant or hippo?
|

Since hippos live near water, and elephants tend to live in grassy areas or near forrestation, this is far more likely to be a horse, actually looks more like a donkey or mule.

Re: Baby elephant or hippo?

how did you find this extreme close up. How do you know where to zoom in one those tiny high rez areas? I'm not talking about the medium rez areas you can see without zooming too much. It's the little tiny areas that you have to keep zooming in until the image get really blurry, and eventually clears to show a small area where you can see a man on a bike, or animals. Please help, I've asked this question before, but no one will help. I'm going nuts zooming in and slowly moving over the earth inhopes of finding the relly high rez areas like the picture you posted here thanks Melissa

It is a either a mule or something from the same family like a donkey, a big one though, It is obvious from its long ears... It's cool image by the way.

Re: Baby elephant or hippo?
|

Cyrusace - I agree, I think it's a donkey. Maybe a pregnant female, judging by the girth. I doubt these villagers can afford to feed a pack animal so much that it gets fat! It's about the size of a donkey. An elephant or hippo would not be inside the village without causing an enormous stir among the populace! And a hippo needs to be in water most of the time.
