There is a new installer available as of Saturday night, Sept 17th. It will be made available via check-for-updates on Monday: GoogleEarth-0616.exe (works for both Plus and Free) GoogleEarthPro-0616.exe -- Feedback is appreciated -- Changes between Sept 3rd (.0548) and Sept 17th (.0616) --- Features --- - Edit->'Find in "Places"', allows searching for items (Ctrl-F) - embedded web window now has vertical split option --- (works great on wide screen monitors especially for National Geographic) - embedded web window now has "pop-out" option - network link icons now reflect status of fetching/failed - the included (optional) Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer now has a "search in Google Earth" option. - If you already have the most recent version of IE or FF Google Toolbar installed, restarting your browser after the GE install should enable the new search option. You may need to enable it in the Google Toolbar options. Bug fixes --- - Share with Google Earth Community now supports default browser - reverse geocoding (address lookup) now works in Pro (Ctrl+RightClick) - standard-quality mode Movie Maker improvements - network link fetch now admits to understanding KML (allows servers to do the right thing) - while in full-screen, zooming into Google Campus (and now National Geographic) the wrong resolution was displayed - opening empty KML file no longer complains of XML parse error - a formatting regression in the description balloon has been fixed Cosmetic Changes --- - The size/shape of the search entry area have changed - Note, the free installer is now called GoogleEarthSetup.exe |

Just one thing I don't like.... my comp is set at 800x600 (lol its ok to laugh!!) and i noticed since installing the newer version, google earth always returns its windowed mode even after i've maximised it and then reopened the program. previous versions never did this - they always stayed like they did before the program was closed... hope this helps....

Before installing 0616 I copied myplaces.kml to another directory. I then installed 0616 in a directory I selected (D:\Google). I then copied myplaces.kml back in there. But GE doesn't use it! It just came up with the default sightseeing places. I then saved a new placemark to Myplaces and exited. I then checked the myplaces.kml file. Unchanged. I then searched my entire PC for any other versions of myplaces.kml. There are none. I then searched for all recently modified files. It found the cache and cache index but no myplaces. I then started GE, opened my old myplaces.kml file, then moved all the stuff from temporary places to myplaces and exited GE. Again no Myplaces.kml file and no recent changed myplaces.kml file anywhere. Where are myplaces now stored??? (I am on GE Plus). |

Another problem with myplaces. After opening the old myplaces.kml and moving from temporary places to myplaces, it can no longer find any of my images. I had lots of kmz files with images in them. All on my local machine. Now it refuses to display the images in any of them. Says it cannot find them. |

The new features are quite nice and very welcome. As a mouse-challenged and slightly disabled user, I wonder if I could ask you to give back a CTRL-key shortcut for returning to Click & Zoom navigation. It would be a bonus to also give us a CTRL shortcut key for Tools/Options, since Alt-T-O doesn't work. Thanks for listening! BennJay |

I have been using Google Earth for about a half a year, I have updated as all the updates came out, but reading the info at Google Earth, (http://desktop.google.com/download/earth/), on the 0616 Beta update it says the new update is broad band only. Now I'm on dial up and have been all along, don't remember seeing this note before. Do I dare update? Will I be able to use this? |

Some suggestions: More control over graphics settings. A terrain detail slider and a fog distance slider. Also, time of day and weather controls would be slick. A particle system would be stunning. With a particle system tied into a weather database, like weather.com or accuweather.com, or any number of the US government weather sites, if it was snowing in Ohio it would show particle snow in that area if you had weather effects turned on. It would be nice to have a seperate cache for vertex data (Such as terrain and buildings) because as we all know mountains will always be there, so even if the database is updated, the mountains will be the same shape. (Would reduce download transactions with Google and save everyone a little money.) While we're at it, specularity thrown on large bodies of water would look great. Measure doesn't take into account height. A little checkbox in measure to, "Calculate height" would be nice, followed by a popup warning, "Notice: Height data is not totally accurate. Your results will vary from actual height distance." Third party GPS device support would be a nice addition, so if I'm on a laptop on a satellite Internet connection or WiMAX, GoogleEarth would have a, "YOU ARE HERE" button which when clicked grabs the GPS data from the GPS device and shows you exactly where you are. You guys should hire me. |

Hello, i'm unable to upgrade from GE .548, nor install (after uninstalling GE .548). the new .616 installer always tell me that : <<< A previous instance of GE is currently running. The installation of GE cannot continue until the running version is closed. The installer wil now exit. >>> the pc has been restarted, and no GE is running... what can i do ? i had no problems with previous installers... what is checked to determine that GE is currently running ? maybe i have a process that make GE detection behave incorrectly (antivirus, MSN messenger, etc ...) how can i help finding such an incompatibility ? |

Another search enchancement please: The ability to search keywords which are sourced from active layers on any current view. |

Hello again, ok... i've seen the link from the main GoogleEarth page : GoogleEarthSetup.exe so i just had to rename the installer file... (my file was GoogleEarth.exe, so the installer believed that the main GE executable file was launched, wrongly) |
Aurelien, We're sorry for the inconvenience on that one. We are actually trying to make the upgrade smoother by avoiding the "reboot" requirement if you happen to install it while the old one is still running. The collision between the installer name and program name is unfortunate (hence the "Setup" addition) but we'll try to find another way to distinguish in the next installer. bigbri, Regarding the question about broadband... .0616 is no different than prior, I think you just noticed it for the first time. If you can handle the download rate over dialup, .0616 will be no slower. |

Then it might be a good idea to use keywords, like "layer:roads", to specify which layer. |

The d/l that I got was named GoogleEarth-0616.exe, which installed over .548 just fine and is working well. I like it when the version number is included in the filename like that and it saves me from having to do it when I d/l it (or afterwards).

GE .0616 stops responding to the user clicking the "more" link in a balloon for an 'i' icon after a few such clicks. You know, the ones that respresent a forum topic. Also, after clicking that "more" link, the built-in browser does not show the page loading cursor like IE would. That would be helpful. As is, until the page visibly starts to load, you do not know if you got the link or not -- especially with GE moving that balloon around. ( ) Strangely enough, the cursor appears when I use the back button.
Quote: That sounds logical and flexible enough! I still cannot believe why GE has not implemented something similar based on the fact that the majority of data is layer dependent as far as searching is concerned. I hope this request will be considered seriously by the developers. It will be truly useful. |

Phil, My experience with Google Earth betas has been that when it first opens, it is always in windowed mode. I then maximize it. Then I hit F11 to go full-window. Then I hit F11 again. Instead of going back to maximized, GE goes to Windowed. It is very consistent in this behaviour. I've posted msgs on this back when I first encountered it, but it is still the same. It's a very small complaint so I've pretty much ignored it of late. Ernie |

Hi, I had 3 unsuccessful attempts at downloading GoogleEarth free version, then I saw you had a new installer GoogleEarth-0616.exe so I tried that too, but still nothing would install. Each time I downloaded, I would get the Icon on my desktop, but it would not open. I have Windows ME Could that be the problem, also I have Dial-Up service.. I also checked in my Add-Remove programs in the control panel, but it was NOT there. Can you help.??? |

Google Earth only installs on Win2000 and WinXP. It sounds like you're also having download problems because a full download should at least run and tell you that it can't install. |

First off, very cool program and my wife and I enjoy using Google Earth quite a bit. She being a city planner was quite impressed with the amount of detail that certain areas have. So thank you! I just recently upgraded and I've found a couple of things that maybe someone could provide some solutions for. When I first open Goggle Earth before the upgrade, the window position and size would be where I left it. Since the installation of the upgrade, the window now moves off to a different location and I find myself having to adjust the window and place it to where I want it to be. Another thing was when I was using the "Searching Options" button to the right of the input area, whenever I tried to clear my searches, it would repeat whatever was in the results box. The only way I discovered to clear the box, short of restarting the program was to fly to a location that I had set up in the "My Places" folder. The last thing I found was again dealing with the search results box, there was a point where the "Clear" button, "Play Tour" and "Stop Tour" button would disappear and I had no way of clearing the search results box. Even when I went to the "Edit" pull down to "Clear Search History" the results would not be deleted and I had to restart the program to basically reset things. That's when I noticed my first statement about the window moving back to a "default" location it would seem. Again, it is a wonderful program and these are the first set of problems that I've encountered in my short time using the program. So if these have been mentioned already, I do apologize and if someone could point me in the direction of where I can find the solutions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! |

As others have noted, .0616 has a problem remembering its windows size and position on close and restart. Annoying but not fatal. More important, as we accumulate new layers (e.g. USGS earthquake and hydrograph layers, or storm layers) more and more information needs to be downloaded at startup before the earth displays. This can serioulsy bog down the computer rendering it a stone, until startup is complete; with no indication about what it is doing. The program claims when it loads the myplace.kml that it is loading only the active layers. This appears to be untrue. Even with no active layers enabled, but lots of them present and not enabled, the startup time can be interminable. Two possible solutions: 1) Allow the creation of at least one additional folder (beside Places and Temporary) to allow "storage" of uncommonly used layers. This would make them available for use, but Google Earth would have no need to examine or load them at startup. 2) Check the code to ensure that Google Earth is NOT loading the layers, then deciding which ones to show; and that it is instead only checking to see whcih layers are enabled and loading only those. 2a) Add some means of seeing what on earth the program is doing that is taking so long. Currently there is the load indicator for zooms, rotates and pans that tells the progress on refining the current view. What is lacking is an ability to turn on an indicator of what is being downloaded, from where, by which layer, and wha tthe progress is. This might best be provided in a toggleable diagnostic screen. Note also, on close the save of current state information (or cache clearing, or ... something else) can also take a long time and is probably related. Rebooting while that is occurring (and cannot be seen by the user) causes Google Earth to complain on the next startup that it wasn't closed properly and the cache may need to be cleared. Thanks for a great program! |

Quote: I have noticed no such problems with GE (0616). If it's in windowed mode and I hit full, then it does that. If I hit F11 it goes to full screen. If I shut GE down while in windowed mode, it runs next time in that mode. If I shut it down in full mode, it runs next time in that mode. I just don't understand why some people are having problems. I suspect it's graphics card related or something like that.

Bob: Yes, I'm seeing the same, correct, window behavior in this latest beta. To save a msg, I'll comment here on others' remarks about errors on shutdown or loading. There is one thing that has been happening to me, sporadically, that may be my own situation, or it may be more global. There are times when I exit GE, Then I'll try to start GE, minutes or hours later, and get nothing, nothing at all. I have found that sometimes GE does not completely exit. It goes away from my screen, but it is still running as a process in Windows Task Manager (I'm using XP). As long as it is still listed in Task Manager, I can't start it again. I've taken to checking Task Manager to be sure GE exited completely. If it didn't, I end the task in TM. Now, sometimes GE takes a while after disappearing from the screen because it's writing out a large Myplaces file. That's what got me started with monitoring it in TM. But, overnight? Ernie |

I have personally seen no increases in loading time when running GE, even with some storm overlays in my places, but not ticked on. I know it's been mentioned before but let me just mention it again because of how BADLY it needs to be fixed: The left panels, in full screen mode, DO NOT turn on and off properly after switching out of full-screen mode and back in, and there are generally just an endless number of bugs associated with the logic for turning on and off the left panels. They randomly shrink down to nothing and you have to expand them again, turning them all off sometimes turns them all back on, etc. |

I am registered at a later date. Therefore I don't know what the case was before. While working in GE application and use the IE below, I can keep go on being logged-in. Whereas, when I open a link on this IE window into another window in any way (either by the right-click menu or by the buttons on the right of the GE application), I am logged-out. Mostly I am made remaining logged-in in one window when I navigate. Is this normal? Or should I upgrade something? Shouldn't the GE system know that I am logged-in? Or is there a limitation by MS or confusion of the server (or whatever) variables? I wonder a bit since I am a web site designer. If you answer my question I will be glad and informed because I think that one should be navigate freely on whatever page it uses, once he or she introduced himself or herself. |

You may be seeing something that in my mind is not nessecarialy a bug but rather behaviour that is not intuititve. That is, it might be by design. What I saw: In normal mode (not full screen), show both the Places and Layers panes. Next, start a search that returns results. GE will partially collapse the Layers and Places panes to make room for the search results. The collapse is always proportional. If Places took up 30% of the Total space used by both the Places and Layers panes before your search, it will take up that amount after the search window opens -- but with the new total space allocated to the Places and Layers panes. You can test that by immediately closing the Search results (hit Clear) without changing heights of either the places pane or layers pane. Do not attempt to resize the search results. Just clear them. |
From what I can tell, the two browsers are the same but different. GE does not actually use IE. It uses the "INET subsystem." That is the layout engine and some related components. I suspect INET uses seperate cookie and cache storage for each client (which would include IE). If so, just because you have some file (pick a big one if you test this with broadband) in one cache, do not expect it to be in the other. |

I see. Then we (esp people in countries like that of mine where technology is not yet reached fully broadbands or what so ever bands there exist) have to accept this chaos. I also experience many other difficulties like opening the links automatically in a new window. Also, no one (as much as i have red the posts) talk about the interface that is no user friendly. I think the GE people do have no time to deal with these issues since they have to read so many posts and answer them and since they have to be interested with the database and the imageries. |

Typically black output when printing or saving images is a graphics driver issue. Try both OpenGL and DirectX modes in Google Earth and update your graphics driver. |

1. Create a folder and put something in it (unless you already have a folder with contents). 2. Collapse that folder, but leave it visible. 3. Drag a placemark (or any type of GE object that can be placed into a folder) to the now collapsed folder. GE will refuse to put the item into the collapsed folder. BTW: GE should expand folders when you hover while dragging. That allows you to put the item being dragged inside a subfolder. Windows Explorer does this. Finally, it would really help when I rearrange items if the places pane would scroll as needed while dragging. GE is the only program I have seen that does not do that. |

I have a P4 with XP. It is not excellent as the other Celeron 450. You are right. For instance, the P4 one has a turbo-cache vga card that makes me crazy. ![]() I do not know whether you know these. So I spent a little time in writing these: It may be something else. For instance, use an older card with its latest drivers, if you have. If it is no solution or you do not have an older one, do, before going to service, decreae hardware acceleration of the video card and restart. If you play music while you are on GE and the sound card is onboard, decreasing hardware acceleration of the sound card in directX will help. But be sceptical because, for instance, my P4 is not available for the GE although the video RAM is 512, the Ram is over 1GB, etc etc. It is fast but not for the GE.

I admit that at times it's difficult to drag a placemark into any given folder (you have to be 'right on the mark' with the drag), but otherwise I have had no problem dragging placemarks into folder with the new version (or any previous version). So it's user error IMHO...
I must disagree. Did you collapse the target folder or scroll the places list so the target was not visible? It is rather tough to call it user error. I have specialized in UI design and development for 10 years. GE's behaviour is dramatically different from that of Windows Explorer. If you look at the image below, Target folder one is off-screen. I can not drag items there in GE. Target folder two is on-screen, but collapsed. Again, GE will not let you drag items there. Target folder three is on-screen and expanded. Finally, GE will let you drop items onto the folder.

Your <p></p> is ill-formed as it contains a partial table structure and could, conceivably lead to errors when viewing. I'd personally suggest the table suggestion in this post or you could try: <div> <img src='.....' width='300'> </div> which ought to work |

With the problem of exit, you should have sth going wrong in your system. I think you also have the problem of applications and system tray things shut-down when you have shut down the computer (ie, when you shut down, does your windows alert you that "... cannot be closed" etc?). |

GE Free .0616 is causes an occasional systems crash. It looks like a BSOD type situation, but the BSOD itself is missing. (I am not sure if DVI monitors can display a BSOD or not. That is the type of my primary monitor.) Lately, when it happens, both monitors go black. However, at one point, the DVI monitor was displaying smeared images (mostly streaks at a 20 degree angle). Regardless, of when it happens, it always happens at random times. Usually Windows has been up a while and GE started sometime within the past half hour. This problem did not occur with older versions. My system: * P5 3G * 1 GB Mem * 120 HD drive * ATI Raedon 9700 128 megs |
