Update Mac Beta 2 - support for 10.3.9 (Panther)

Today we launched the second beta of Google Earth Mac. It's available for download on earth.google.com.

v.3.1.0617 is equivalent to the public version of Google Earth for the PC (v3.0.0762) but includes a number of improvements over the first Mac Beta (v3.1.0527) .

Differences To Last Mac Beta (v3.1.0527):

* 10.3.9 support - if you have 10.3.8 or earlier, it will prompt you to update OS X.
* Entourage email support - from the "Preferences" dialog, go to the last tab and select the "Entourage" option.
(courtesy of Barry Wainwright (blog))
* UFS and case-sensitive versions of HFS+ disk formats now work.
* Fixed printing quality issue for road labels, compass and logo.
* Fixed display of remote images in balloons.
* Restored missing road labels at low altitudes.
* Password protected network links no longer crash but need a workaround - see release notes.
* More detailed "About" dialog for OS version and Graphics Card.
* GPX and LOC files no longer crash client - still unsupported.
* Fixed network links for remote KMZ files - thanks to BBS users ArnaudDumont and Ad_s for identifying and helping to resolve this problem.
* Fixed remote images getting "Image Not Found" error after refresh.
* Fixed corruption or missing overlays for large images.
* Fixed various crashes.

Future Development:

See release notes.

Graphics Card Known Issues:

http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=33878

Outstanding Issues Not Mentioned In Release Notes:

* There is an issue using Entourage as your mail client for Google Earth on OS X 10.3.9. Sending an email while Entourage is closed will open Entourage but not create the email. As a workaround open Entourage before sending mail from Google Earth and it will work correctly.
* Not compatible with window shade.

Google Earth Mac - Plus and Pro Versions

We are developing the Plus and Pro version of Google Earth for the Mac. Though it's in the works, we do not have a public schedule for when it will be released.

the icon selector for placemarks does not alway show up in the top right.

i have attached a JPG to illustrate, but had to zip it - so it looks like a placemark to download - but it is not...

Re: Google Earth Mac - Plus and Pro Versions

This is great news as I have been waiting since Mac migrated to a UNIX platform to see someone develop a decent user friendly GIS. I am currently using arcview through virtual pc which is a dog! More than happy to help test a beta version as I do a lot of GIS work. Will the tools you are developing have any analytical capacity?

Re: Update Mac Beta 2 - support for 10.3.9 (Panther)

I can make Google Earth crash reproducably on my system. In fact, it's almost impossible to use on my box due to these crashes...

Google Earth version 3.1.0617.0
Build Date: Feb 9 2006
Build Time: 17:20:38
OS: OS X 10.4.5
Video: NVIDIA NV34MAP OpenGL Engine (1.5 NVIDIA-1.4.18)
Max Texture Size = 4096x4096

hardware is Apple PowerBook G4 12"

This is easily reproducable on my system... steps:
1) create a placemark and save it to MyPlaces
2) Ctrl-<Mouse-Click> on it to bring up the context menu
3) Perform any operation in the menu or click away to dismiss it
4) Ctrl-<Mouse-Click> on any item
You are unable to select any items in the menu and a few seconds later GE crashes.

Here's the first few lines of the crash:

Date/Time: 2006-03-08 21:04:05.797 -0800
OS Version: 10.4.5 (Build 8H14)

Re: Update Mac Beta 3 ?

hate to sound like a broken record, but is there any way for us to know what the develoment schedule is?

it would be nice to know when you are trying to get the final versions out of the door .

not looking for promises, just an idea of your goals.

thanks

Re: Update Mac Beta 2 - decimals displayed in Pref

Thanks for GE Mac OS X!!! it is great hopefully you develop it to auto updates!

The number of decimals displayed by GE for the latitute and longitude coordinates (seconds 00.00000") of any location should be user definable in Preferences Menu this would be a good feature added to GE Mac specially when sharing geodetic monument locations where it needs seconds have 5 decimals figures!

Re: Update Mac Beta 2 - decimals displayed in Pref

Hello Holsteinson:

I'm new to the forum. Your topic (coordinates) was the closest to my question. So before I start another thread, do you know:

How to get the coordinates of the places in "My Places"?

iow, if I mark a place, can I get the Lat/Long of that place?
Short of moving the cursor oover the place, and writing them down.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Update Mac Beta 2 - decimals displayed in Pref

Ctrl-click on the item in the Places pane, select "Edit...", check the "Advanced" box and click on the "Locations" tab. That will display the lat/lon info.

Re: Update Mac Beta 2 - decimals displayed in Pref

Once you insert a placemark over your point of interest if you select the ADVANCED button in PROPERTIES it will display the latitute and longitude values with 2 decimal places

I need to have 5 decimal places in GE (instead of 2) in order to input and display the geodetic coordinates of these monuments Hope GE developers listen soon!

Re: Google Earth Mac - Plus and Pro Versions

Yes ! Please let us know when we might expect the Mac Version of Google Earth Pro.

I have multiple uses for Google Earth Pro on my fast Macintosh. I don't want to use the Windows Version if I can afford to wait for the Mac version.

Thanks for your insight.
