I've compiled several different resources for viewing information in Google Earth concerning the California fires. Included are satellite views of the smoke plumes, US Forest Service and NASA fire data, maps from local radio station KPBS in San Diego, and time animations by Joey Wade showing the fire spread and smoke plumes. Read the details here. |

I just added a time animation of smoke visible from GoesWest satellite to my network link. These images were captured at 30 minute intervals beginning on Sunday morning and make a pretty good animation. It's based on visible sattelite images so only visible during the daytime. Let the animation run completely through once or twice to load everything into memory, then it should run smoothly. Also, you probably will want to adjust the speed of the animation by clicking on check box on right side of time slider. If you already have my network link then it should show up automatically. Otherwise, you can download it from attached. Also, the smoke animation is about 3.5 megs so might take a minute or two to download. Please let me know if any problems. |

A USDA Forest Service research aircraft using a thermal infrared imaging system captured these image mosaics. The thermal infra-red sensor used to collect this data records the amount of energy radiated from the surface, producing a temperature map of the bare ground, vegetation, and ash layers. In these images, the cooler unburned vegetation and the still-warm ash layer are black to gray, the hotspots are red, and areas of flaming combustion are orange. There are lots of great posts and kml's here on this coverage of the Southern California Fires. Though I live in Southern California, we were on a trip to Northern California during the past two weeks. The damage is even worse than I thought. My parents lived in Rancho Bernardo, one of the hardest hit areas, during the last years of their lives. Looking at maps and overlays it is amazing and tragic to see how much was lost. The San Diego Union-Tribune has many galleries of the fires' progress. |

Using the GeoMac Wildfire Information mapping software ( http://geomac.usgs.gov/viewer/viewer.htm ) I was able to take a screen shot of the Witch Creek and Poomacha burn areas, I'm sure these are just estimations however it gives you a good idea of just how large this fire was. I only wish I could get a higher resolution image for the overlay. Link to overlay data: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=1041342 |

hello, we are providing mobile mapping support on the poochama and rice fires, and have put together this collection of mostly final fire perimeters. this data was created by the teams managing the fires. they used GPS, infrared flights, UAVs, and topo maps to create this data. this data was downloaded from the USGS geomac site, and shows up as red polygons.. also, we added fire perimeters from the 2003 fires - these show up in blue. link to this KML: http://www.northtreefire.com/gis/intel/socal-fires.kmz more fire related KMLs: http://www.northtreefire.com/gis/virtual.php |
