BBC Report

Earth tremor felt across England

People from across large parts of England have reported an earth tremor.
The BBC has received calls from people in Yorkshire, the West Midlands, Manchester, Berkshire, London and Gloucestershire about a "quake".

The tremor could be felt in central Birmingham at about 0100 GMT but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.

The US Geological Survey's website reported a quake of the magnitude of 4.7 and said the epicentre was 30 miles (50km) south of Kingston-upon-Hull.

The West Midlands was hit by an earthquake in 2002 in the Dudley area that reached a magnitude of 5.0 and caused damage to homes.

It was very strong, I felt the whole room moving

Jemma Harrison, 22, in Bury, Greater Manchester, said: "It was really bad. I was fast asleep and woke up and the room was shaking and there was a loud bang and alarms were going off."

Natasha Cavey, in Tipton in the West Midlands, said: "All my cupboard doors flew open and the whole house shook, it was unreal. I can't believe it."

David Somerset, 41, from Driffield near Beverley in East Yorkshire, said: "I have never felt one as strong as that one before. I was in my sitting room and the grandfather clock was rattling rather violently.

"It was very strong, I felt the whole room moving."

Re: 4.7 Quake in UK

Felt here in Leek too!

Some pictures shaking etc, but not big enough to make things fall off.

Certainly an experience!!

The USGS has some more information on the quake here and you can also add this dynamic KML layer showing where the epicenter was.

Now I'm listening to all the melodramatic folks calling into the news channels

Re: England Earthquake 2008

I'm more than 130 miles away from the epicentre in Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, and I felt the quake.

It absolutely terrified me!! I was just dropping off to sleep, and it felt like my dog had jumped up onto my bed and then was, kind of, jumping around on it. So I looked for the dog and she wasn't there, which was when I started to feel really spooked. I lay in bed for about 5 minutes trying to figure out what had happened, and then I turned on the radio and heard the presenter on Five Live saying to the news reader "did the earth just move for you?", and then I realised that it was an earthquake.

Actually felt quite excited after that and took ages to get back to sleep, not helped by the lovely chorus of bird song who were obviously as spooked as I had been

Am sorry to see this morning that some people did get injured and some homes were damaged.

Sheesh, first I get flooded, then I get earthquaked - any odds on what'll happen next?!?!
