USCG Loran Station Attu

You can make out the runways, but not the 625' tower

I spent a night here while the air crew went to Shemya. About 20+ people there still in 2005 maintaining a long range navigation system (100kHz)

Plane makes it about once every two weeks with mail and food. They fuel once a year.

You said "You can make out the runways, but not the 625' tower".
You are wrong. You can make out the 625' tower, it casts it's own shadow on the ground just behind the main the main building on the east side of the Loran Station Attu Airport. You just have to zoom in and look carefully..

Sorry to disappoint you but the tower shadow you illustrated is from a 90 foot tower installed in 1983, not the 625 foot Loran-C tower.

You can see the Loran Tower from Google Earth. It's closer to the Peaceful River between the old transmitter building and the new transmitter building.

Re: USCG Loran Station Attu

Your incorrect on assuming the tower next to the building is the 625 foot Loran-C tower. That tower was built in 1983, a self supporting tower for other uses.

The Loran-C tower can be found near the Peaceful River using the WGS 84 coordinates of the tower. I've seen the tower on Google Earth and

You may ask how I know. I was there when that tower was built and I did two tours on the Last Island in the Aleutian Chain.

For another look at the tower you illustrated can be found from about midway up the 625 ft tower ... in this image Code:
