johan dijkstra, born 23-12-1896, died 21-2-1978 (BIO) was the most important impressionistic painter of the 20th century in groningen and had his workshop around here. at the art academy minerva he was mainly influenced by van gogh, which clearly shows up in some of his works, mostly local landscapes.

as a local, I know the last picture was painted at the zuidlaardermarkt.

in 1918, he founded the art movement 'de ploeg' (the plow movement) and rendered his most famous work in 1925 when he painted the 'rustende zigters'. (resting scythers). just before the war, his largest assignment was to paint the stained glass windows of the university's academy building.
