Lucifer, I appreciate the gigantic task you're doing with the Tiour de France. Last year I was able to follow it thanks to you. Do you have any plans in finishing the 2007 Tour? Thanks, Juan in Texas |

I completed some of the Tour de France work. See the Google Map with some KML files on: http://www.mapstars.com/tour-de-france/tour-de-france-2007-google-maps.htm Rene |

The problem is that you don't see the actual route... |

Hi! It was my first time I do such big project in Google Earth, and I think I managed to finish is sufficient! I did it completely by hand. Is that your way as well, or do you recommend a tool I can use for this?Regards, Arthur |

Hello FlightCaptain, I do not use any particular tools, I mainly use the build in routing function of GE and manual editing. first I place the tick marks along the route, the I use the navigate from here and to here in GE to get the road information. I copy the path from the search windo intop a folde in my places. This way you get all the pieces of the road together. You can then save the folder as KML (not KMZ) file. You will see there a lot of coordinate blocks. Just copy all the numbers you find between <coordinates> and </coordinates> into a single block. make a KML file with just one small track in GE and replace the data with the one you got above. finished is your route. Load it in GE and choose "Properties" to fine tune the track. The main problem is getting all the pieces in the right order... But I dont know if this is realy faster than doing it manually ![]() I also used the online Spreadsheet Editgrid to geocode the information from Letour.fr editgrid.com/user/lucifer/first Editgrid has an export function to GE (See attached file, not working with Googlemaps!) |
Thanks! See what I can do with it... |
By the way, what exactly is the difference between a .kml and a .kmz file? Arthur |
The diference between a KML and a KMZ file is... nearly nothing ![]() Just ZIP your KML file and rename it to KMZ ![]() Well there are a few more details, for example grafics and Icons are included in the KMZ file. if you are curious, just take a KMZ file, rename it to .ZIP and unpack it to see what is inside. |

Hi Lucifer, I saw you (and a few others) have worked hard to visualize the 2007 stages of the TdF. Nice work! Will you be able to make live coverage possible for the stages? Same as last year? It was a superb solution to follow the Tour during work-days. Keep up the good work! Greetz, Lunie |

Hi all, This file from eartview.nl has some mistakes - just look on stage #11 (mainly near Arles) and compare to the official map http://www.letour.fr/2007/TDF/COURSE/us/etape_par_etape_1100.html If you're looking for correct data you can use GPS coordinates that can be found here site http://tour.ard.de/tdf/strecke/index.htm (click on a stage, then click GPS-Daten Download (txt) ) I used this data to create an add-on for NASA World Wind - http://www.worldwindcentral.com/wiki/Add-on:Tour_de_France |

What you call "arrivée" in your placemark in London is actually the departure, I'm told. Biiiig mistake, if you ask me. |

Is there live tracking in Google Earth this year? I've searched around but haven't been able to find it. |

Is live tracking available this year? |

Quote: Will it work for every next stages? Est-ce que ce lien va marcher pour les prochaines étapes comme l'année dernière? |

Thanks Glooton, All the rest of You, sorry I am not able to do the live tracking this year because i am on the nice "Isola d'Elba" in Italy and with no internet connection... Well appart from just now in one of the very few and expensive internet cafe. I hope the link from Glooton will do the job. |
Enjoy your vacation, lucifer666. I am sure it is well deserved. Glooton's tracker is very good. The data connexion breaks sometimes in the mountain, but if you reload it it often comes back. You can see that the actual route varies from that in lucifer's original post. For instance today the route crossed the Tignes dam, having gone up the valley on the opposite side to the published route. |

I noticed while watching / following a few other stages, some errors. So if I can get the attachment up, I am posting Stage 10 with corrections. I got the info doublechecking between Ubisofts tracking website and the official Tour de France site. Hope this is better accurate. (Edited) The route segments in purple are the corrected segments; there was 1 misplaced mountain point I moved & colored purple as well. I made a few MINOR adjustments to the original route by moving waypoints, and I moved the Arrivee a few blocks to the point indicated on the UBIsoft website. I'll try to check tomorrows & future stages as well & post if there are any major differences. After tonight, I'll try to get a day ahead as well. |
Sorry so late close to stage start. Once again, changes are in Purple. Changes per UBIsoft website map. I still had a question with their rendering of the Arles area, the French Route Numbers from the Tour de France website did not seem to synch up with any of the roads in town, so I copied UBIsoft verbatim, but that leaves the sprint point and feed zone in limbo. I don't have GPS so I can't accurately enough track to the exact KMs to place them. If I can tell placements by TV coverage, then I'll come back and edit after the fact for the archives. Note they almost go thru the whole town of Montpelier at the finish; I think the arrivee was located near the stadium so the caravan would have plenty of parking. Tomorrow, I'll try to get a stage ahead so I'm not falling asleep doing this and posting so near start time, but I had a prior commitment Wednesday. |

Your hard work is much appreciated, tomnov |

Only a few minor ones, especially a few of the Mountain points. I've not gotten ahead yet, but I'm getting better. (All my additions including KMs are in Purple.) small movements in path I just corrected original points. Thank U to MapMyRide.com, where the TDF org made the original post. They updated since then, but it was here I was able to implement KM markers on the map. Thank also UBILabs website, they seem to pick up most of the corrections. Stay posted for more stages. (Edited 7/20/07) My sleepy head last night forgot to include the correction path. So the KMs looked a little off in one spot. So I'm reposting the kmz folder to include it. |

Here is the Stage 13 TT. The finish and MT Point is the only thing slightly moved. I added km marks and the time check. If you have downloaded any of the other stage changes, note I forgot the correction path in the attachment yesterday. I reuploaded the folder with the path added. I should be able to upload Stage 14 before I go to bed tonite, or 1st thing tomorrow. After this I should be able to stay 1 stage ahead. Thanx again to the UBILabs website, they seem to have most of the accurate information, especially at the finishes. I copied their finish line and run-in into Montpelier on stage 11, that included the traffic circle 500 meters from the finish, that Freddie Rodriquez crashed on and said it wasn't even in the Race Handbook. Hats off to UBILabs for having the inside dish on that one!! |

Here are the route corrections for Stage 14. Boy, it was tough matching the mileages to the maps in some cases. But in the end, I think the route corrections (in purple as usual) made the mileages make sense. It was tough figuring the side roads to make the mileages match up. If anyone notices any errors during the telecast. PLEASE feel free to correct me. I am especially concerned about the finish, although I think I remember the profile of the Plateau de Beille finish a few years ago when Valverde (or was it Basso?) pulled away from Lance Armstrong at the finish. <Edited: Nope, wasn't the stage I was thinking of; last time Lance was here in '04 he won.> I guess all of the TV trailers park in the fields next to the finish line. It should be an exciting stage. Enjoy watching!!! |
