What happened to our old Fossett thread? I can't even access it. Even if it is being locked to move the discussion to this new thread, we should still have access to the old thread with a note in it for people to come here.

I agree, at least they should leave the thread up with the note to migrate here. There's a lot of good info on that thread.
Hope everyone makes it here ok.

There's a link on the old thread that takes you to the archive of our orginal Steve Fossett thread for read-only now : "Archive >> Discussions (read only)." The last post on that thread is from no_stranger informing us about the change of thread; apparently it was getting too large, hence this new thread. I wonder if everyone else will find their way here.

Yes you are right I really should.

ATTENTION:
As I mentioned in the old thread a couple days the other day I registered the domains:
InternetSAR.org, InternetSAR.net, InternetSAR.com & InternetSAR.info with the idea of making one of them (probably the .org) the home of our efforts to organize an official and long lived Internet based SAR organization and search tool. We are still actively doing what we can with the search for Steve Fossett, but I'd like to see us start to institutionalize the knowledge we have gained from the past ten weeks of efforts.

Anyone who is willing to help organize such an effort please PM me. For now we should use this thread for the bulk of our discussion, but it would be nice to start getting a feel for who would like to help organize us. Organizing such an organization will take a lot of talented people who have many different backgrounds including SAR, imagery analysis, legal, fund raising (even if we all volunteer there will still be costs), computer programming (I can't do this alone), technical writing, graphics design, etc. I'd like to see our effort to organize be as inclusive as is possible.

I don't know how such an organization would be organized, but I kind of envision a not-for-profit model with the objective being the creation of the most cost effective method possible to conduct collaborative imagery analysis possible.

In the short run I can provide web hosting for our efforts, but eventually if things go well our efforts might need their own web servers.

Sanborn2 0909-10500 series imagery now accessible

Okay it took me two really long days of programming, reverse engineering and data mining but I was able to sleuth out the data I needed from DontKnowFoo's Sanborn2.KML overlay that contained reported MTurk HITs.

At this point in time the entire Sanborn2 0909-10400 series (10400-10499) and most of the known Sanborn2 0909-10500 series (10500-10567) of imagery is now accessible via my KML overlay generator. The exceptions are the image sets 0909-10553 and 0909-10566. I know all of the file names for images that exist for 0909-10553, but I do not have any coordinate data for this image set. I have not been able to find any images in the 0909-10566 series so I don't know if this imagery exists on Amazon's servers.

As much as many of us (myself included) have griped about people reporting every strange rock, tree, sagebrush and car as a possible sighting, we have the thousands of false reports to thank for our ability to gain access to the 0909-10500 series of imagery. If it weren't for the thousands of false reports, contained in the Sanborn2.KML overlay, I would not have had all of the coordinate data I needed to be able gain access to the 10500 series of imagery.

My efforts to provide access to the 0909-10500 series of imagery did require some retooling of my KML generator to accommodate lots of file naming inconsistancies in the 0909-10500 series of imagery, so please report any issues that crop up.

My next two tasks will be to allow people to request overlays using DMS coordinates in addition to decimal degree coordinates and to build a master boundary overlay for what is known of the Sanborn 2 imagery. I would also like to try and figure out some coordinate data for the 0909-10553 imagery.

Probably because the software developer never considered that a thread could end up with around 5,560 posts.

Do you have your display preferences set to "expanded" or "collapsed" topics? And have you chosen "flat" or "threaded" mode? If "collapsed" you should see something like this

You can click on any of the links outlined in red to go the last page (the exact number of the page will depend on how many posts per page you have selected in your preferences). You can access the preferences through your "My home" page.

If viewing in flat mode you can see and edit the number of the page in the url:

Page 10: bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/992512/page/vc/fpart/10/vc/1
Page 200: bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/992512/page/vc/fpart/200/vc/1

Hope this helps.

Then one wouldn't need to download the whole damn thread just to get to the most recent post. Surely I have missed(again), the easier way; what is that easier way?

I always open this thread from the shortcut in "My Favorites," and whenever I close out the thread, I click "My Favorites" to add the shortcut again which, of course, it tells me it is already there and asks if I want to overwrite the previous shortcut. Click "yes" and then it always opens to the last page you were on.

Another change you might like is that you can now access the 0909-10500 series of imagery via my KML generator. This should be a really big aid in reviewing older MTurk reports in DKF's Sanborn2.kml overlay and Violent Skies reports.

Those trees are quaking aspen but we call them quakies because of the way the leaves move with the slightest breeze.

There is nothing more beautiful than stands of quakies in the draws between pines.

Gaining access to Sanborn2 0909-10553 image set

Thanks to some assistance from one of our comrades in arms on this search effort who is mostly lurking here, I now have the data I need to process in order to gain access to the 0909-10553 imagery. I will try to update my database such that people can gain access to this image set tomorrow (I need to go to bed right now).

It does appear, however, that this imagery was never reviewed via MTurk HIT assignments (as there were no reported HITs). This leads to a question that I would like folks here to weigh in on. Since this imagery has not been looked at, should I shift the automatic overlay assignments to this image set and then cycle back to the other imagery after we have completed a pass of the 0909-10553 imagery?

It would provide us with new imagery to look at for a bit. Currently folks are working on the 0909-10491 image set and I would expect given current rates of imagery review it could take us a week or two to get to the 0909-10553 imagery on our current path. If I jumped ahead to the 0909-10553 imagery, once one pass of this imagery had been completed I would return back to where we had left off which would cycle us back to the 0909-10553 imagery for a second pass within a week or two.

What would be really nice is if we could attract some more eyes to be reviewing the imagery as it would be nice to move through the imagery a little faster than we are. Also some real efforts need to process reported MTurk HITs on the Sanborn2.kml overlay and the reports on Violent Skies to see if some really good leads have been reported.

One thing I could do to improve the reported HIT review is deconstruct the Saborn2.kml file and create a separate auto assignment and overlay generation process so that we knew that we were reviewing these reports in a systematic fashion. This would take me a couple days of work, but I think I could come up with something that would work pretty well. What I may want to do with this process is assign user specific keys so that I can ensure each reported HIT was reviewed by two or three different people. What I am thinking is that maybe the best eyes amongst us should be focusing on reviewing reported HITs while the rest of us continue on with the automatic imagery assignment process we are currently using.

I really am thinking we need to start to organize our efforts so that we know who is working on what to make sure we are covering all our bases.

ALL LURKERS AND QUIET TYPES PLEASE NOTE

ALL LURKERS AND QUIET TYPES PLEASE NOTE

I know there are a lot of folks who have been lurking here and/or are working away on imagery via my KML generator without actively participating in these discussions. For the purposes of better organizing our efforts and to help me get a better idea how many people are actively working on imagery. I'm going to ask all infrequent posters and lurkers who are still helping search imagery to either post a comment here, send me a PM or contact me via the contact form on my website at: http://environmentalchemistry.com/contact.html

I'm particularly interested in knowing the experience level of those who are actively reviewing imagery. We really need to organize our efforts and make sure there are some really experienced eyes evaluating previously reported Sanborn2 MTurk HITs and Violent Skies reports. I want to make sure that we actually follow through on reported objects and not simply let them be forgotten about. After all the work everyone has put into this effort, it would really suck if Steve Fossett's plane is among the reported objects from our efforts, but was never followed up on by the most experienced among us and reported to the authorities.

Thanks.

What day were the sanborn images taken?

I am wondering how much effect the time passed is having on what we see. For instance will enough time have passed that we will see the internal structure of the wings now instead of the flimsy coverings?

For instance. If the plane had caught fire would we be be looking for structure instead of covered wing shapes since the burned materials would have possibly fallen away by now?

It does appear, however, that this imagery was never reviewed via MTurk HIT assignments (as there were no reported HITs). This leads to a question that I would like folks here to weigh in on. Since this imagery has not been looked at, should I shift the automatic overlay assignments to this image set and then cycle back to the other imagery after we have completed a pass of the 0909-10553 imagery?

I vote for looking at the new 0909-10553 imagery for a while. I wonder why it was never reviewed in MTurk. Is it because the location isn't in a "high probability crash area?" Where is the location of this new image set in relation to the 0909-10400 series?

It could have been as simple as accidentally not getting loaded into MTurk even though the imagery was uploaded to Amazon's servers.

I would vote for the images in the northern part of the SB2 images...for whatever that is worth to anyone....say from highway 359 and to the north of there.

Yes, I for one do not want to review any old images, because I don't think I would see anything that hadn't been picked up on before. Although, I think your method of rows does generate a new perspective of scanning through the image, and is worthwhile; but it is a repeat, nonetheless.

Yes much of it is repeat, but repeating does increase probability of anything that is there (if it is there) actually being sighted. With that said a very important aspect of all of this is the review of reported objects, which up until now has not been done in a systematic fashion. Everyone has been so focused on the initial review, that very little effort has been made to evaluate what has been reported.

I'm going to work on making sure we have a systematic way to at least evaluate the sightings reported via MTurk.

Given the response from everyone so far about my question on the 0909-10553 imagery, I will jump us forward to that image set just as soon as I get my database updated with the new information. I will work on making 0909-10553 imagery available as soon as I can. I had lots of "honey do this" stuff today so I didn't get to the 0909-10553 today as I had hoped, but maybe I'll get some slack the Mrs. tomorrow.

Re: ALL LURKERS AND QUIET TYPES PLEASE NOTE

Ken, I've been viewing some of the VS hits. I turned off all overlays from Geo-delivery4 and all the other "older" overlay images. That means I'm trying to wotk strictly from what evr VS downloads with the hit.
The problem here is that by doing that I'm either looking at old GE base images or i'm looking at the DG_3, the Geoeye_Ikonos-2, or the Geoeye_Delivery4, which is reall poor resolution.
It doesn't seem to me that I'm getting any Sanborn2 image bits from VS at all. Most of the 100% (RED) hits from VS are in the Geoeye-Delivery4 area, but that resolution is really bad.
Am I doing something wrong again?

I do believe the area of interest from the last radar sitings and ground search last month was in an area bounded by these corners...

From 359/167 and the CA/NV border, North to Mud Springs, South East down Powell Canyon to the intersection of Powell Canyon Road and Highway 359 intersection and back West on 359 to the CA/NV border...but I do believe SB2 only covers a small portion of this area...

Check . Thanks a lot, I see better the area.

Yes, this smells radar analysis path. The problem with the missing strip(s) in the center of imagery is that this seems somebody thinking that the area just under the path is too much sensitive to be send to us, "thousands of nerds" ("bunch of armchairs", "couch potatoes", etc.). But maybe I'm too much susceptible...

I would think something like that also..but the same is true in SB1....maybe that was just the path the plane took..it flew one pass..made a 180deg turn then started the next path...then they go back and fill in the missing strip...just a guess..

Re: Gaining access to Sanborn2 0909-10553 image se

You got it Vanaj, that's exactly how they do it. Overlapping alternating strips. Bt alternating the 180 degree passes they can create the overlaps.
Otherwise the 180 degree turn would be a tight turn around which is wasted fuel, time, and energy.
Do you guys have a complete download of the SB-2? All I have is the small patches Ken downloads.

Anything in the missing San1 strip that we would likely be prevented from looking at? I can understand the need for security if required, or is it just that images were not taken for this section?

Get the idea. Fly N/S or S/N with wide 180 turn, although a 4 mile wide gap, between a 7.8 mile wide and 3.2 mile wide set of images is a bit of a bummer! Would of thought that the turn would be extended on some of the 7.8m sections, fill in the gaps to the west of 3.2m section, rather than flying over previously filmed areas. Maths was never one of my strong points, but IMO the (missing strip) images exist, we just havent got them.

People should start being assigned 0909-10553 imagery to be reviewed. Once I see we have completed this imagery I will shift the assignments back to where we left off in 0909-10493.

I will also work on generating a master overlay boundary for Sanborn2 so that we can figure out which image sets people think should be made a priority to review.

If you want to review VS Sanborn2 reports, it does not good to click on the KML link on the VS page for the reported hit, because this only takes you to the coordinates in Google Earth, It does not provide the Sanborn 2 Imagery. To get the imagery you need to copy the decimal coordinates from the Violent Skies report and past them into my Sanborn 2 KML overlay generator. It would be nice if Violent Skies provided a link to my KML generator directly, but I don't think they are actively doing anything with the Internet Fossett Search efforts anymore other than continuing to host their form.

Grrrr....

Okay, I'm not sure why it worked for me when I tested it, but the inconsistent file naming of the 0909-10500 series bit me in the butt again. This time it dealt with the image level where some images of the 0909-10500 series can be either level 6, 7 or 8.

Yes, I had seen this yesterday and was thinking that it's too bad we weren't more advanced yet with our "beta" InternetSAR and wished that the family could afford to get high-quality images of the
