it is an image error listed as 'hieroglyph' in this collection of GS oddities by PriceCollins.

The problem, though, is that I see that the picture has been spliced on one side of the hieroglyph. The error is on two pictures that align with each other, which is pretty strange to me.

Not sure why Google sky split the image, probably some tile processing, but both images are coming from the same source. See http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1011770/an/0/page/0
